Franc Kramberger (born October 7, 1936 in Sveti Lenart v Slovenskih goricah , German St. Leonhard in the Windischen Büheln) is retired Archbishop of Maribor .

Franc Kramberger was ordained a priest on June 29, 1960 in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Maribor Cathedral) . In 1965 he became prefect of the Slomšek student seminar in Maribor , where he was director until 1972. From 1974 he taught at the theological faculty in Laibach .

On November 6th, 1980 he was appointed Bishop of Maribor by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop on December 21, 1980 by the Apostolic Nuncio in Yugoslavia, Archbishop Michele Cecchini ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Ljubljana (Laibach) Alojzij Šuštar and the Bishop of Graz-Seckau Johann Weber . On April 7, 2006, the diocese of Maribor was raised to the status of archdiocese and Kramberger was the first archbishop of Maribor. With the re-establishment of the dioceses Murska Sobota and Celje , which are subordinate to Maribor , Kramberger also became a metropolitan .

Archbishop Kramberger was criticized in 2007 and 2011 for risky economic activities in his archdiocese . Therefore, Pope Benedict XVI appointed on January 31, 2009 the former auxiliary bishop (2000-2006) Anton Stres as coadjutor bishop of Maribor. On February 3, 2011, the Pope accepted his resignation shortly before reaching the age limit of 75 years.

In 2018, Kramberger was charged by the Slovenian public prosecutor's office for embezzlement in connection with the aforementioned share transactions . Kramberger, next to whom the former diocesan economist Mirko Krašovec and two other men were indicted, denied direct involvement. The first court hearing was scheduled for April 5, 2018.
