Maksimilijan Držečnik (born October 5, 1903 in Ribnica na Pohorju , † May 13, 1978 in Maribor ) was Bishop of Maribor .

Life

Maksimilijan Držečnik was ordained a priest on October 30, 1932 . In the academic year 1936/37 he taught sociology , ethics and the Holy Scriptures at the Higher Theological School of Marburg .

On September 15, 1946 he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Lavant and at the same time titular bishop of Abrittum and consecrated bishop on December 15, 1946.

After the death of Bishop Ivan Jožef Tomažič in 1949 he was appointed administrator of the Lavant Diocese, which had no bishop during the period of Yugoslav communism until 1960. It was not until June 15, 1960 that Držečnik was appointed diocesan bishop of Lavant. Since the Lavanttal, which gave the diocese its name, was no longer in the diocese since the collapse of the Austrian monarchy and the bishopric had already been moved from St. Andrä to Marburg in 1859 , the diocese was renamed "Diocese Maribor" in 1962. Držečnik became the first bishop of Maribor.

He died on May 13, 1978 and was buried in Maribor Cathedral.
