The Lavanttal (Slovenian Labotska dolina ) is a valley in the Lavanttal Alps in southern Austria in the eastern part of the federal state of Carinthia . It covers almost 1000 square kilometers and is inhabited by around 60,000 people.

geography

Koralpe
Saualpe

The Lavant Valley is crossed by the Lavant River for a length of 64 kilometers from north to south. The river has its origin in the border area between Styria and Carinthia on the Styrian Zirbitzkogel , it flows into the Drau at Lavamünd .

The valley is divided into the Upper Lavant Valley, which lies north of the Twimberger Graben , and the Lower Lavant Valley to the south of it. In the lower, wider valley it is embedded between Kor and Saualpe . In the Upper Lavant Valley, it lies between the Packalpe and the Seetal Alps .

The Lavanttal forms the majority of the political district of Wolfsberg .

The Lavanttal is lined on both sides of the Lavant by a range of terraces several tens of meters high , which was formed by the deposits of a silting Würm-Ice Age natural reservoir . The lake was formed by the fast-growing gravel terrace of approximately at Völkermarkt ending Draugletschers dammed which blocked near Lavamünd (Ettendorf, Achalm, Plestätten) the Lavant. The far from Wolfsberg to St. Paul at about 430  m above sea level. A. The mountain ranges to be traced and the fossils found in the deposits probably again and again by the population could have contributed to the legend about the formation of the Lavant valley . On the right bank of the lake terrace, for example, are the centers of St. Andrä and St. Jakob (municipality of St. Andrä), Wolkersdorf (municipality of Wolfsberg), Mitter- and Unterpichling (municipality of St. Andrä) and St. Margarethen (municipality of St. Paul).

climate

The climate of the Lavant Valley is relatively dry with around 800 mm of annual precipitation. In the winter months there is often an inversion of the weather , which brings fog and a comparatively high level of pollution in the valley floor. The mean heights around 800 to 1000 meters are then climatically preferred, they are sunnier and warmer than the valley locations.

economy

Agriculture

In the valley areas, maize cultivation with pigs and chickens is predominant. In the Lower Lavant Valley and in the neighboring Granitztal there is a lot of fruit growing, especially apples for cider and schnapps products. There are also several orchards here . Another specialty is asparagus . Most of the Carinthian vineyards, which are only around 20 hectares in size, are also located in the Lavant Valley.

At higher altitudes and also in the Upper Lavant Valley, grassland management predominates. The timber industry with the large spruce stands on Koralpe and Saualpe is also of great importance .

Mining

From 1845 to 1968, lignite from the Miocene was mined in the Lavant Valley, especially in the south of Wolfsberg (St. Stefan, Wolkersdorf) . At the end of March 31, 1968, 1,500 miners were still employed.

The underground mining of iron mica ( hematite ) is active near Waldenstein . Around 7,500 tons are mined annually, the majority of which is exported . The main area of application is corrosion protection .

For on the Koralpe lying lithium -Occurrence drill testing have been conducted since the 2016th Commercial dismantling is planned for 2021.

Arts and Culture

Above all, well-known artist personalities such as Christine Lavant , Switbert Lobisser and Gerhart Ellert have done a lot to make the culture of the valley known. In the Benedictine Monastery of St. Paul regularly special exhibitions that complement the rich art collections.

Infrastructure

Highway

The south autobahn passes from the Pack in the north into the Lavant valley, where there is the first exit (around 4 kilometers long) to Bad St. Leonhard in the Lavant valley . Then it goes over the second highest motorway bridge in Austria, the Lavant valley crossing , on to the district capital Wolfsberg (north and south exit). After the last motorway exit Sankt Andrä (Carinthia) (around 2 kilometers long exit) it goes in a triple chain of tunnels into the Völkermarkt district .

railroad

The Lavanttalbahn originally ran through the entire Lavanttal, north of Reichenfels to south to Lavamünd . Today, passenger traffic only uses the stretch between Bad St. Leonhard im Lavanttal and Sankt Paul im Lavanttal , where you turn off the route onto the Jauntalbahn in the direction of Klagenfurt . Sporadic freight traffic still takes place. The private Lavamünder Bahn operated between Sankt Paul im Lavanttal and Lavamünd as a nostalgic train with occasional freight traffic before this section of the route was removed in March 2016.

Work has been going on since around 2008 on the Koralmbahn , which will connect the region to the high-speed line in Austria from around 2023 with the Lavanttal train station . Travel times from / to Graz (36 minutes) and Klagenfurt (22 minutes) will be significantly reduced. There are major construction sites until completion near Sankt Paul im Lavanttal , where the Koralm tunnel has its west portal and where the Lavanttal train station is also being built, as well as in the Granitztal , where work has been carried out on the Granitztal tunnel chain since 2015 .
