Peter Beck-Mannagetta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Beck-Mannagetta (born June 21, 1917 in Vienna ; † November 20, 1998 in Baden ) was an Austrian geologist. The Mannagetta oven , a striking rock formation west of Marhof , municipality of Stainz in Styria, is named after him.

Life

Peter Beck-Mannagetta was the child of the section head in the Ministry of Finance Eugen Beck Ritter von Mannagetta and Lerchenau and his wife Paula, nee. Westhauser and a grandson of the public prosecutor Josef Beck von Mannagetta and Lerchenau . One of his uncles was the botanist Günther Beck von Mannagetta und Lerchenau , another was the kk  secret council and chairman of the kk patent office Paul.

He completed his school days at the Hegelgasse elementary school and the Schottengymnasium in Vienna , where he passed the Matura on June 9, 1936 . After serving in the military as a one-year volunteer in 1936/37, he studied geology at the University of Vienna and on April 10, 1941 passed the teaching examination for the then natural history subject . The studies took place as part of his military service leave from the front, which brought him to Poland and Russia. His dissertation deals with the upper reaches of the Laßnitz , the preparatory work for it resulted from the work in the context of the water management general planning for Styria.

His doctorate in natural sciences ( Dr. rer. Nat. ) Took place on February 10, 1941. From June 1942 he was an assistant at the Geological Institute of the University of Vienna. In November 1943 he worked in defense geology in Berlin-Wannsee and Siegen , then in France, Italy, Hungary and Slovakia. Most recently, he was a non-commissioned officer, his wartime ending on May 17, 1945 when he was released from captivity by the American army .

He worked as an assistant at the University of Vienna until February 10, 1947, then at the Federal Geological Institute . His professional activity over the next few decades included work on the geological maps of the Koralpen region, which led to a number of geological and petrological publications. On January 1, 1953, he was appointed geologist, on January 1, 1960, chief geologist, and on January 1, 1974, district geologist for Carinthia and Styria. In this function, he further developed the good relationships between the Federal Geological Institute and the regional offices of Carinthia and Styria, which benefited his work.

Peter Beck-Mannagetta made the first in 1951 to a mineral resource on fire back in the wine level attention (as the lithium - mineral spodumene very similar diopside - aplite ). After closer examination, this site turned out to be the largest occurrence of lithium in Europe. His discoveries also include the occurrence of gabbro and eclogite at the Bärofen southwest of the Hebalm .

Peter Beck-Mannagetta is the author of a series of geological maps covering areas of the Lavanttal Alps . On behalf of the Ligist forest operations of the Order of Malta , one of the largest landowners in the area, he worked out the geological basis of the forests in the Hebalm area. From 1964 Peter Beck-Mannagetta worked as an expert in engineering geology and mineralogy and represented Austria in international associations such as the Carpatho-Balkan Geological Association.

From 1962 to 1997 he was the curator of the Johann Wilhelm Ritter von Beck Mannagetta Foundation, which supports students from Lower Austria with scholarships. This foundation was created from the fortune of the imperial personal physician Johann Wilhelm Mannagetta (1588–1666), the physician of the Emperor Ferdinand II. , Ferdinand III. and Leopold I. had been.

As a representative of the interests of the employees at the Federal Geological Institute, Peter Beck-Mannagetta worked as a staff representative from 1967 and participated in the design of remuneration rules, some of which were created at his suggestion (book allowance, height allowance). The staff representation at this institution was founded by him.

At the suggestion of Peter Beck-Mannagetta, several geologically significant objects were declared natural monuments: 1967 a rock formation in Marhof near Stainz , which was named after him for the Mannagetta furnace , 1973 the rock outcrops in the beach area of the Tertiary Sea with clam tracks and beach conglomerate on the Triassic dolomite in Bad Vöslau and the Königshöhle near Baden , after whose archaeological finds the Baden culture is named. He also suggested protecting a number of umbrella pines in the communities of Baden and Mödling .

He supported the referendum against the construction of the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant and pointed out the geological fault zones below the intended construction site. Peter Beck-Mannagetta campaigned for the preservation of the Hainburger Au and other landscapes worthy of protection, so he opposed the establishment of a nuclear waste storage facility on the Rosenhügel west of Stainz .

At the end of 1982 Peter Beck-Mannagetta retired. He had been married to Ruth Graeber from Bielefeld (Westphalia) since 1944, and the marriage had three children. Peter Beck-Mannagetta is buried at the Weidlinger Friedhof in Klosterneuburg .
