Josef Beck, Knight of Mannagetta and Lerchenau (born February 9, 1815 in Butsch , † October 8, 1887 in Vienna ) was an Austrian lawyer and historian .

Life

Josef Beck-Mannagetta, son of an innkeeper (1764-1830), like his brother Anton (the father of the Austrian Prime Minister Max Wladimir von Beck ) received a legal education. He initially worked as a private teacher. After the revolution of 1848 he tried to pursue a political career, but was appointed kk public prosecutor in Neutitschein (today Nový Jičín) in 1850 , a career that had only existed in Austrian legal life since that year. He was married to Amalie geb. von Mannagetta and Lerchenau (1833–1916), with whom he had the children Paul, Leo, Günther and Eugen. In 1856 Josef Beck was transferred to the regional court in Pressburg as a senior public prosecutor. In 1860 he came to the Higher Regional Court in Brno. In 1864 he moved to Graz. And in 1872 he got a post at the Supreme Court in Vienna, where he died on October 8, 1887. He is buried at the Weidlinger Friedhof .

A few days before his death, on October 6, 1887, he was raised to the knighthood of "Beck von Mannagetta and Lerchenau". Josef Beck was an honorary citizen of the city of Neutitschein.

Among his children and grandchildren are personalities with important careers in the Austrian state administration and in science, such as:

A granddaughter was married to a doctor, known for his war diary from the First World War , Dr. med. Richard Ritter von Stenitzer.

Beck's interest in history and probably the low workload made him the author of several historical works. He wrote the book “History of the City of Neutitschein and Its Surroundings” (1853), a work that has received much attention to this day and a valuable source on the history of the city. According to a report in the journal "Die Biene" (Neutitschein 1853, Vol. III, p. 142) the author made this publication the "property and publisher of the Kirchthurmbau-Comité", so that the net profit from the sale of the book in 1854 for restoration the tower of the parish church could be used, which was struck by lightning in 1844.

Further historical articles by Josef Beck appeared in the Neutitscheiner Zeitung published by Johann Nepomuk Enders . He dealt with topics such as “The Mansfeld and Danes in Neutitschein” in “Writings of the hist. Stat. Section - V. Heft, 1853 "or" The aristocratic family of the Krawarner "in the" Illustrierte Reichs-Boten "(1863). Of the four-volume work “The History of the Anabaptists”, however, only volume 1 “The History of the Anabaptists in Austria-Hungary 1526–1785” was published. Johann Loserth took over his academic legacy and continued his work.
