Johann Loserth

Johann Loserth (born September 1, 1846 in Fulnek , Moravia , † August 30, 1936 in Graz ) was an Austrian historian .

Life

Loserth studied in Tübingen and Vienna , where he obtained a doctorate in philosophy. He then worked as a high school teacher. From 1875 he became a professor of general history at the Franz Joseph University in Czernowitz , before moving to the Karl Franzens University Graz in 1893 , where he held a professorship for medieval and modern history until his retirement in 1917.

He was particularly fond of the history of Moravia, Hussitism , the Anabaptists and the history of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation in Carinthia, Styria and Carniola and the neighboring countries. He took over the scientific legacy of Josef Beck von Mannagetta and Lerchenau on the Anabaptist movement and continued his research.

His extensive literary work includes around 300 titles. His work »Reformation and Counter-Reformation in the Inner Austrian Lands« is regarded as a “landmark” in the historiography of Austrian Protestantism . Since 1893 he was a member of the Historical State Commission for Styria , since 1896 a corresponding member and since 1933 a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , since 1908 a full member of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences and conferring the title of Hofrat .
