Johann Baptist von Weiß (born July 17, 1820 in Ettenheim , Baden , † March 8, 1899 in Graz , Styria ) was a German historian, writer and university professor. He became known for his 22-volume world history and other historical works.

Life

Although he came from a humble background, Weiss was able to attend the Lyceum in Freiburg and study in Tübingen , Heidelberg and Munich . In 1844 he took over a teaching position for French and English at the higher citizen school in Freiburg. After the revolution of 1848 , during which he advocated a Greater German solution and turned against the Baden Republic, Weiss took over the editorial office of the Freiburg newspaper . In 1854 he was appointed professor at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . There he began to write his world history, which he worked on until his death. Further works are the “History of Alfred the Great” (1852), the “History of German Folk Costumes in the Middle Ages” (1865) and “Byzantine Stories” (1872).

Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria appointed him a lifelong member of the manor house , elevated him to the personal nobility and awarded him several medals. Pope Pius IX awarded him the Order of Gregorius . A street is named after him in his hometown of Ettenheim.
