Barbara Stelzl-Marx

Barbara Stelzl-Marx (born April 10, 1971 in Graz ) is an Austrian historian . She was named Austrian Scientist of the Year 2019 by the Club of Education and Science Journalists .

Life

From 1993 to 2002 she was a research assistant / postdoc research assistant at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War . She received her doctorate in 1998 with the dissertation “American and Soviet prisoners of war in German hands. Facts and fictions of an extreme situation ”. 2010 habilitation them with the signature: "The inside view of the Soviet occupation in Austria from 1945 to 1955. Experience, Perception, Memory ”and acquired the Venia legendi for contemporary history. From 2002 to 2018 she was deputy director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for War Impact Research, in 2018 she became interim director and in 2019 she took over the management of the institute.

Since 2019 she has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the House of History in the Museum Niederösterreich and since the same year has been teaching as professor for European contemporary history with a focus on conflict and migration research at the University of Graz .

Her main research interests are children of war ( occupation children ), Soviet occupation in Austria 1945–1955 , Cold War , prisoners of war and forced laborers of the Second World War and Liebenau camp during the Nazi era.
