Leykam Buchverlag, founded in Graz in 1585, is one of the oldest publishers in Austria .

Right from the start, the publishing house worked closely with the University of Graz, which was founded in the same year . In addition to science, the publishing program continues to focus on education, textbooks, non-fiction and fiction. With the non-fiction book in particular, the publishing house wants to make a contribution to socio-political discourse and to Austrian and Styrian identity and culture.

In the field of science, Leykam Verlag cooperates closely with the Graz University Press, which was founded in 2006 by the Karl-Franzens University. The aim of the cooperation is to make interesting research results of the university accessible to a wider audience.

history

Leykam Buchverlag is one of the oldest and most traditional publishers in Austria, with roots going back to 1585. In that year Georg Widmanstetter from Bavaria founded a printing company on behalf of the Jesuit University in Graz , which has developed into a renowned non-fiction and literary publisher over almost half a century. Georg Widmanstetter was appointed to the court printer in Graz, the company was run by him and his family successors for more than 200 years.

Andreas Leykam , who was trained in Vienna and presumably from Mainz , came to Graz in 1776 and initially worked as an assistant in the Widmanstetter Hofbuchdruckerei . After he was given permission by Emperor Joseph II , he founded his own printing company in 1781/82, which made the previous printing monopoly of the Widmanstetter printing company obsolete. In 1806 the Widmanstetter printing company was incorporated into that of Leykam. Andreas Leykam built his company into one of the leading printing, publishing and paper industries in the Habsburg monarchy of that time . After his death, the company was initially run by his heirs as a family business and then as a stock corporation until it was finally split into two companies around 130 years ago (Leykam AG Buch Druck und Verlag, Leykam Mürzaler AG in the paper division).

Until the end of 2012, Leykam Buchverlag was part of Leykam Medien AG and was then sold to Medienfabrik Graz, the former Styrian state printing company. Since 2017, Leykam Verlag has been owned by the independent, privately owned investment company GL Invest.
