Günther Jontes

Günther Jontes (born December 26, 1939 in Graz ) is an Austrian folklorist. From 1983 until his retirement he was an associate professor at the Institute for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz , which was previously called the Institute for Folklore.

Act

Jontes was director of the Museum of the City of Leoben from 1970 to 2001 and has been a member of the State Historical Commission for Styria since 1989 , including a member of the Standing Committee from 2002 to 2016. Jontes' main focus is on European folklore and cultural history. His main research interests concern mining and funeral culture , folk tales, linguistics and material science.

Jontes also deals with non-European cultures, especially the culture of India and the Himalayan countries .

He published books and scientific works, especially on Styrian history and cultural history. He continues to work scientifically after his retirement.

Jontes is married to Lieselotte Jontes, a PhD historian who was a librarian and specialist librarian for the documentation of the mining industry at the University of Leoben until her retirement .

He was a member of the Graz fraternity Allemannia.
