August Paterno (born July 31, 1935 in Dornbirn ; † July 10, 2007 in Horn ) was a Roman Catholic chaplain and author and Austrian television chaplain .

Chaplain Paterno was often wrongly dubbed “Father Paterno”.

Life

August Paterno studied theology and philosophy in Innsbruck and Salamanca after finishing school and working as a court clerk and accountant . In 1966 he was ordained a priest. He worked as a chaplain in Klaus, from 1967 in the Mariahilf parish and as a popular religious educator at the commercial school and commercial academy in Bregenz (until 1987), later in Vienna and Pulkau .

Since 1968 he has been a freelancer at the ORF state studio in Vorarlberg. For ORF television, Paterno designed the programs “Christ in der Zeit” and “Questions des Christians”, which were among the most successful religious TV series in Austria. On the radio, he was in charge of the programs "Das Wort an die Kranken", "Faith Talks", "Just for Thought", "Morning Contemplation" and "Ecumenical Morning Celebration".

August Paterno wrote well-read columns in the Neue Vorarlberger Tageszeitung and in the Kurier and was editor of the magazine "Welt in Christus" for many years. Paterno led trips and created documentaries about the Holy Land, oriental churches in Israel, Palestine, Syria and teaching projects in Costa Rica. Paterno was also president of Kivani's Europa-Wien I.

Paterno came to Pulkau in 1999 and was involved in the construction of the Europahaus (a youth center for young people from Western and Eastern Europe) in the bulk box of the local parsonage, in whose general renovation and further expansion Paterno played a major role. On August 2, 2005, Paterno was given honorary citizenship by the mayor and the city and municipal councils for special services to the municipality of Pulkau.

In 2004, Paterno was accused of sexual abuse . The incidents involving ten young people are said to have occurred in the 1980s. The prosecution as well as the church examined the case, since then Paterno largely withdrew from the public. The proceedings were discontinued due to the statute of limitations . August Paterno defended himself against these allegations to the last.

August Paterno died of cancer and was buried not far from the Europahaus he founded in the Pulkau local cemetery.
