The Federal Trade Academy and Federal Trade School Bregenz (short: BHAK and BHAS Bregenz ) is a vocational middle and higher school in Vorarlberg . It is one of five schools with the commercial academy in Vorarlberg and one of the largest schools in the state. The school currently has over 1100 students (as of 2012/13).

history

Since industry, trade and commerce had been calling for a commercial academy for Vorarlberg since the turn of the century, the first commercial academy was founded in Lustenau in 1937 by joining an existing business school. In autumn 1938 the school moved to the premises of the Mehrerau monastery school . The development of the school was determined in the following seven years by war and National Socialism and pupils who were drafted for the war received a leaving certificate with a so-called “maturity clause”.

After the end of the war, regular school operations were sought again and in 1950 the school finally came under the administration of the federal government and thus moved to an adapted former barracks building. In the following two years the “Association of Friends and Sponsors” was founded to provide financial support to students in need.

Due to the considerable lack of space at the school, the city of Bregenz made a building site available near the Riedenburg train station in 1959. In 1962 the commercial academy was extended to five years and the commercial school to three years, and construction of the new school began. The biggest step in the history of the school, which took place in 1965 and was documented in a commemorative publication, was the opening of the new school building. The youth sports center in Damüls was opened in 1967 and has been used for winter sports weeks, project weeks, introductory days and block events since then. The “Commercial Academy and Commercial School for Working People” (Abend-HAK) was introduced as a further school branch in 1970. In 1974 the School Act brought many innovations, including the establishment of the school community committee. A year later the problem of lack of space was found again.

In 1982 the “Commercial College” took the place of the high school graduate course. This training has lasted four semesters since 1991. In the following year, the "advanced course" was introduced. Systematic school development measures began in 1992, with the structural expansion of the school and the renovation of the existing buildings being the main tasks. Two years later, a new curriculum for the commercial academy was introduced, on the basis of which training focuses (now subject areas) were established. In 1997, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary celebration, a model was developed that gave great importance to questions of “quality assurance” and “school development”. A “counseling network” was set up for the pupils to support them in conflict situations. In order to deepen the contact between school and business, a "Board of Trustees" was established.
In 2007 the school finally faced many new challenges. The central school-leaving certificate, performance standards, modern forms of teaching (cooperative and open learning) and the development of all-day school types are central topics. A full-day form of the commercial school (HAS NEU) was implemented within the framework of school autonomy. In 2011, due to the success of the HAS NEU, a first class of the commercial academy with lunchtime supervision and interlinked teaching (HAK NEU) was introduced.

School types

Commercial college

The commercial academy offers commercial training in four parallel classes with completion of the maturity and diploma examination. This qualification enables professional training and entitlement to study at all Austrian universities, technical colleges and European universities. In 2011 one of these four classes was converted to a full-time school.

Duration and training

After five years of training, graduates graduate from the Federal Trade Academy Bregenz with a matriculation and diploma examination. It is also worth knowing that the maturity and diploma examination certificate replaces the company examination and thus enables numerous professions to be carried out in Austria and in the countries of the EU after the prescribed practical period (1 to 3 years).

Subjects

At the end of the second year, the commercial academy offers in-depth training in a specialty for every student. Each individual student chooses one of the six subjects that suits them best:

  • Information management and media design
As the name suggests, this subject deals with media design and information management. In the area of media design, the subjects of color theory, layout, design, creation of interactive CDs, digital videos and digital photography are dealt with. In the area of information management, one deals with the topics of web design, data organization and modeling, web publishing and Web 2.0. Entry into professions in the areas of graphics, ITECH, multimedia and design are possible after graduation.
  • marketing
In the first year only the third foreign language is taught. Students who have French in regular classes learn Spanish and vice versa. After that, lessons in the subject are often held in English. In marketing, management is then discussed.
  • Controlling and annual financial statements
In controlling you learn a lot about corporate management. Students have to solve complex problems and very often deal with numbers and word processors. You will learn to work with various computer programs and, among other things, to prepare balance sheet analyzes.
  • Ecological quality management
The field of eco-social quality management (FÖSQM for short) deals with the seminars of biology, psychology and philosophy. In addition to the theoretical lessons, numerous excursions are undertaken. The "Fair Trade Point" has served as a practice firm for FÖSQM for a long time. Here is with Fairtrade traded products. With the completion of this subject a knowledge base for a job in project management is created.
  • Cultural management
In cultural management people work creatively. In addition to art history, cultural theory and music history, other creative and cultural topics are dealt with. After completing this specialization, you can prefer to work at cultural institutions, media companies and cultural departments of the respective city or local government. Many excursions are also undertaken in this field, for example museums, exhibitions or theater performances.
  • Sports management
In the first year, a lot of emphasis is placed on theory on the subjects of exercise, health, anatomy and sports history. In the fourth and fifth grades, the practice firm is added and sporting events are organized in the school. You also learn something about financial planning and marketing in sports clubs. The students have the opportunity to take some additional certificates such as the “Fit Youth Instructor”.

Optional items

The Federal Trade Academy also offers important optional items that have something for everyone and for which the pupils can register at the beginning of the year (starting from the 3rd year).

Educational goals

A modern vocational training today must include a wide range of knowledge in commercial areas, which is why the commercial academy is particularly useful for acquiring higher education, taking into account commercial training content. The aim is to convey thought methods as well as work and decision-making content that are intended to serve the immediate pursuit of a high-level profession in business and promote the start of a scientific course.

After completing the Federal Trade Academy in Bregenz, you can work in various areas of activity, for example in credit institutes, in the IT sector, in service companies and in tourism or as a civil servant in regional authorities, in administration and justice and many other professions.

Commercial school

In contrast to the HAK, the commercial school only lasts three years. The biggest differences to the HAK, however, are that the HAS does not teach mathematics, no second foreign language and no training focuses. For this, there are, among other things, BKÜ (company communication and training firm), BFY (Business for You) and seminars that must be attended in subjects such as biology, geography, legal theory and psychology. Since the HAS only lasts three years, the subject area is very limited. That means that you don't learn everything in as much detail as in the HAK. At the end of these three years, the students have to take a final exam, which also includes a project work. Once you have successfully passed your final exam, you can immediately enter professions such as a forwarding agent , office clerk and insurance clerk or work in a service or craft sector. But if you still want to do the Matura, the final exam entitles the graduates to attend the advanced course or the evening HAK (can start in the 5th semester if they can prove French).

Commercial school new

Since the 2007/08 school year, the new commercial school can also be selected as a school type. The Neu Handelsschule is an all-day school where work orders are completed instead of homework. In this way, the ability to work in a team, independent learning and personal responsibility should be learned. From the third grade onwards, a so-called “work experience day” takes place once a week in the afternoon in a company or institution. In the new commercial school, in addition to the commercial school-specific subjects, the students should also practice creative design through photography, painting, exercise and sport, but also "social learning" through class councils, team days, and excursions. After successfully completing the Neu Handelsschule , you have the option of starting your professional life straight away or of attending the advanced course that the HAK Bregenz also offers and subsequently completing a Matura.

HAK Digital Business

HAK Digital Business ( HWI ) has existed since autumn 2001 and is a separate school branch at HAK Bregenz, one of nine school locations across Austria. This is based on current economic and social developments. Mastery of digital technologies is also desired. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of skills and competencies in the field of digital information technology and media. From the second year onwards, the students are equipped with notebooks, but the classrooms are also equipped with devices (projector, printer, internet access). Since the 2016/17 school year, two classes have been accepted per year, which, like the normal HAK, finish with the maturity and diploma examination after five years. The following IT-specific subjects comprise more than 50% of the hours of the HAK Digital Business:

  • Business software and office management
  • applied programming and software development
  • Internet, multimedia and content management
  • Operating systems and network technology
  • Project and quality management
  • Commercial and e-business law

The whole thing is rounded off with learning a wide variety of presentation techniques.

Commercial Academy New

The new commercial academy was introduced in the 2011/12 school year and lasts for five years, with the fifth level taking the maturity and diploma examination, also known as the Matura . At first glance, the HAK Neu differs from the normal commercial academy in that it is an all-day school where you learn and practice and you therefore have no homework and more freedom after school. There is also emphasis on free work, teamwork, independent learning and doing work assignments. These methods are intended to promote the ability to work in a team and also personal responsibility. What should still lead to success is comprehensive support for teachers, support courses and individual learning processes. The creative design subject offers areas such as painting, photography, exercise and sport and other activities.
From the second grade onwards, notebooks are also used in lessons . In the fourth year, the students have practical days in a company once a week. A class council was also introduced to improve cooperation and the working atmosphere. There are also similarities between the new HAK and the normal HAK, which lie in the central content of business administration and accounting . You can also choose between French and Spanish, which then forms the second foreign language alongside English. Even economic computer science , practice firm and office management which are executed in a computer room, play an important role.

Advanced course

After completing a business school or other relevant training, it is possible to attend the advanced course. The advanced course lasts three years and leads to the Matura. In the advanced course you strive for commercial education and you also expand general knowledge. In the commercial area, the focus is on accounting and business administration. Of course, engagement in natural science subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology is very important. As a foreign language, not only English but also French (compulsory) is learned. You have the opportunity to learn Spanish, Russian and Italian in additional lessons. As in the commercial academy, commercial school and other types of school, it is a matter of course in the advanced course that project trips are carried out.

Commercial college

The college at the commercial academy ("Kaufmännisches Kolleg") imparts the knowledge of the vocational training at the commercial academy to the graduates of a general or vocational college. The training lasts four semesters and ends with a diploma examination. The prerequisite for the commercial college (KK) at the HAK Bregenz is a positive secondary school leaving certificate from a general or vocational college.

The entrepreneurship examination is replaced by the diploma examination certificate and enables the practice of many professions in Austria and the EU within a prescribed practical period. This certificate also entitles you to study at Austrian and most European universities and colleges.

In the last semesters, students have the opportunity to specialize in one of the six training focuses offered at this school (see above on subjects ).

There is a special offer for athletes who want to continue their training after graduation but still want to learn a trade. If there is a group of nine interested parties, this group will be accommodated according to the schedule. Intensive training as a sports manager is also possible.

Evening HAK

The HAK Bregenz is the only school in Vorarlberg that offers an evening HAK. Here, young people and adults from the age of 17 are offered free of charge to complete the HAK Matura. Lessons take place from Monday to Thursday, in semesters 5 to 8 from Monday to Friday, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The evening HAK consists of a module system, that is, there are eight semesters and you receive an assessment, i.e. a certificate, after each semester. If certain subjects have already been attended in the upper level, these can be recognized and do not have to be completed from the first semester.

There is no compulsory attendance, but if you fail to appear at the exam dates, you must take an assessment test and, if necessary, a colloquium.
