Siegfried Gasser (born July 16, 1941 in Saarwellingen ( Germany )) is a former mayor of the city of Bregenz and former governor and state parliament president of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg .

Life path

Siegfried Gasser was born on July 16, 1941 as the son of Siegfried and Mathilde Gasser (née Becker) in Saarwellingen in Saarland .
He grew up in Schruns and attended elementary and secondary schools in the Montafon community. From 1955 he attended the Federal Trade Academy in Bregenz . After passing the Matura , Gasser worked as a commercial clerk before doing his military service. He then studied economics at the law faculty of the University of Innsbruck until 1966 .

In 1966 he married Maria Fürst (1938-2010), with whom he has two sons. From 1968 to 1979 Gasser was the managing director of the Vorarlberg data center in Dornbirn .

Political career

In 1970 Siegfried Gasser became a member of the Bregenz city council and city party chairman of the Austrian People's Party in the Vorarlberg state capital. From 1972 he held the office of ÖVP district party chairman. A year later he was appointed to the Vorarlberg state government as a regional councilor with the departments of compulsory schools and kindergartens, housing and housing subsidies, interior affairs, traffic law and guest workers .

From 1984 to 1990 Gasser was the deputy governor of the provincial governors Herbert Keßler and Martin Purtscher of Vorarlberg. In 1990 he was nominated by the ÖVP Bregenz for mayor and a few weeks later as mayor of the capital of Vorarlberg sworn in .

After the state election in September 1994 , Siegfried Gasser was also elected President of the Vorarlberg state parliament. In January 1998 Gasser handed over the office of mayor of the city of Bregenz to Markus Linhart and after the state elections in Vorarlberg in 1999 the office of state president to Manfred Dörler .

Private

His two sons Markus Christoph (* 1967) and the lawyer Johannes Christian (* 1970) work and live with their families in Mauren (Liechtenstein) today .

He has been a member of the Catholic student union AV Austria Innsbruck since 1961 .
