Karl Albert Maria Tizian (born April 12, 1915 in Bregenz , † April 2, 1985 in Lech am Arlberg ) was an Austrian politician of the ÖVP from the state of Vorarlberg . From 1950 to 1970 Tizian was elected mayor of the provincial capital Bregenz and from 1964 to 1974 President of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

Karl Tizian was born on April 12, 1915 in Bregenz as the son of high school professor Karl Tizian and his wife Ida Anna. His father died before he was born on November 3, 1914 as a soldier in World War I , which is why Karl Tizian was raised by his widowed mother. He attended primary school in Bregenz and then the Collegium Bernardi private high school in Mehrerau Abbey, where he graduated from high school in 1934 . He then studied history, art history and archeology at the University of Innsbruck and at the Austrian Cultural Institute in Rome. Karl Tizian was a member of the Catholic student associations Augia Brigantia in the MKV and AV Austria Innsbruck in the ÖCV. As early as 1938 Tizian received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Innsbruck (Dr. phil.). From 1957 Karl Tizian took over the management of the family-owned tobacco company, where he had worked since 1949.

Political career

After serving in the Second World War, Karl Tizian became politically active in the Austrian People's Party as a councilor in the Austrian Economic Chamber and city representative in Bregenz from the late 1940s . In 1950 Karl Tizian was elected Mayor of Bregenz for the first time and subsequently held this office for 20 years. In addition, he was appointed President of the Vorarlberg State Parliament in 1964, which he remained until 1974. During his tenure, in particular the state chancellery and the parliamentary services of the state parliament were strengthened and expanded. In 1974, Tizian succeeded his party colleague Martin Purtscher , who later became governor, as president of the state parliament.

For his political work, Titian was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor of the State of Vorarlberg in 1964 and the Great Golden Medal of Honor with the Star for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1968 . In 1970 he received the Anton-Bruckner-Ring . In addition, after his death, a square in his hometown of Bregenz was renamed Karl-Tizian-Platz .
