Sir Robert Montgomery (born December 2, 1809 in Moville , County Donegal , Ireland , † December 28, 1887 in London ) was a British lieutenant governor in British India .

Life

He was the eldest son of the Rev. Samuel Law Montgomery and Susan Maria McClintock and was born at the New Park family estate in Moville. At the age of seventeen he went to India. Initially he worked in the Indian public service.

Robert Montgomery's first notable position in British India was that of Commissioner at Cawnpore . In May 1857, at the beginning of the great Indian uprising , he was lieutenant governor of the Punjab province in Lahore . He immediately disarmed the local garrison, which prevented them from participating in the riot. For his circumspect behavior he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB).

From April 3, 1858 to February 15, 1859, Montgomery was the Chief Commissioner of Oudh . In 1859 he was reappointed lieutenant governor of the Punjab Province and remained so until 1865. In 1866 he was named Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India (GCSI).

Founded in 1865, the Pakistani city of Sahiwal , formerly Montgomery , was named after Robert Montgomery during the British colonial era.

He died of bronchitis in London in 1887 at the age of 78 and was buried in St Columb's Cathedral in Londonderry .

Marriages and offspring

In 1834 he married Frances Mary Thomason († 1842) for the first time in Pakistan . With her he had a daughter:

After his first wife died of smallpox in 1842 , he married Ellen Jane Lambert in 1845, with whom he had a son:
