St Columb's Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Columban ( St Columb's Cathedral ) in Derry or Londonderry is an Anglican cathedral in the ecclesiastical province of Armagh of the Church of Ireland in Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom . It is dedicated to Saint Columban , one of the twelve apostles of Ireland , who brought Christianity to the region before going to Scotland to introduce it there. It is the first Anglican cathedral in the British Isles to be built after the Reformation . It is the episcopal church of the Anglican diocese of Derry and Raphoe (Counties Londonderry and Donegal) and the parish church of Templemore.
Its foundation stone was laid on August 21, 1628, and it was completed in 1633 by William Parrot in the Gothic style ( Planter 's Gothic ). In the vestibule there is a rhyme inscription which, like the city name form London derry, alludes to the Plantation of Ulster and the commitment of the London Livery Companies :

The cathedral houses many documents from the time of the siege of Derry , including portraits of William III. of England and the city's original locks and keys. There is also a monument to the Victoria Cross bearer Valentine Munbee McMaster (1834–1872). It is considered to be the oldest building in Ireland that is still in use.
