List of cathedrals and basilicas in Ireland
A cathedral is a church with a bishopric. It is the main church of a diocese (ecclesiastical administrative district)
A basilica minor , also basilica pontificia, is an honorary title that the Pope bestows on an important Catholic church regardless of its architectural style. The elevation to the basilica is intended to emphasize the importance for the region and to be tied closer to the Bishop of Rome . For this purpose, the current papal coat of arms is usually attached to the basilica above the portal. Around 1500 churches currently have the title Basilica minor, a third of which are in Italy .
