history

St. Mary's Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary , dates back to the 14th century. It was handed over to the Anglican Church under Elizabeth I. The cathedral partially burned down in 1767 and has been restored with changes. The Anglican Archbishopric of Tuam was abolished after the death of Archbishop Power Le Poer Trench in 1839 and united to form the Diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry . St. Mary's Cathedral is still one of the two bishoprics of this Anglican diocese.

Only after the emancipation of the Catholics in the British Kingdom was the Catholic Archdiocese of Tuam able to build its own new St. Mary's Cathedral in 1837 .
