Building history

Oliver O'Kelly , Catholic Archbishop of Tuam , commissioned Dominic Madden to build a Catholic cathedral in Tuam, after the Saint Mary's Cathedral of the 14th century under Elizabeth I, the Anglican fed worship and the public Roman Catholic worship was banned for two hundred years . The foundation stone was laid on April 30, 1827. The main building material was limestone. In 1829 Madden left the project because his planned choir had to be downsized for financial reasons. The construction work was then directed by Marcus Murray. Construction of the cathedral was completed on August 18, 1837. The three-story tower is 43 meters high. In 1859 the tower clock was installed.
