The Archdiocese of Tuam ( Irish : Ard-Deoise Thuama , Latin : Archidioecesis Tuamensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church of Ireland with its seat in Tuam in County Galway .
history
Iarlaithe mac Loga (Jarlath) is considered to be the first bishop of Tuam in the 6th century.
The diocese was founded in 1111 by the synod of Rathbreasail and raised to an archbishopric in 1152. In the period that followed, the medieval bishoprics of Annaghdown and Mayo merged into the new diocese.
Under Elizabeth I , the 14th century St. Mary's Cathedral became Anglican , and public Catholic worship was banned until the 18th century. The Anglican Archdiocese of Tuam of the Church of Ireland existed until 1839. It was abolished after the death of Archbishop Power Le Poer Trench in 1839 and united to form the diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry .
It was not until the 19th century that the neo-Gothic Cathedral of the Assumption could be built as a new Roman Catholic episcopal church.
The area of the archbishopric is in the west of Ireland. The dioceses of Achonry , Clonfert , Elphin , Galway and Kilmacduagh and Killala are assigned as suffragan dioceses .
