The Roman Catholic Diocese of Raphoe ( Latin Dioecesis Rapotensis , Irish Deoise Ráth Bhoth , English Diocese of Raphoe ) is in Ireland situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Letterkenny . The area of the diocese largely coincides with County Donegal . The diocese has 33 parishes in six deaneries .
history
The diocese of Raphoe was established in the 5th century. 1152 the diocese of Raphoe was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Armagh as a suffragan .
The bishopric in Raphoe has not been occupied since the Reformation , the remains of the old cathedral there became part of the cathedral of the Anglican Church of Ireland .
In 1901 the bishopric was re-established in Letterkenny and the cathedral St. Eunan and St. Columba was consecrated. The original diocese name was retained.
