Philip Boyce OCD (born January 25, 1940 in Downings , County Donegal ) is an Irish religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Raphoe .

Life

Boyce went to school in Meevagh at Derrhassen School and Castlemartyr College in County Cork . After finishing school he studied philosophy in Dublin and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Faculty Teresianum in Rome , where he was ordained a priest on April 17, 1966 . Boyce became a member of the Discalced Carmelite Order . In 1977 he became a doctor of theology with a dissertation on the spirituality of Cardinal John Henry Newman . After completing his studies, he taught dogmatics at the Teresianum in Rome .

On June 29, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Raphoe . The secretary of the Congregation for Bishops , Archbishop Jorge María Mejía , ordained him episcopal on October 1st of the same year . Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Emanuele Gerada , and his predecessor Séamus Hegarty , Bishop of Derry .

In May 1999 the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments .

On June 9, 2017, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.

From March 26, 2018 to April 15 of the following year, he was Apostolic Administrator of the vacant Diocese of Dromore .
