Séamus Hegarty

Séamus Hegarty (born January 26, 1940 in Kilcar , County Donegal , † September 20, 2019 in Letterkenny , Co Donegal) was an Irish clergyman and from 1994 to 2011 Roman Catholic Bishop of Derry in Ireland .

Life

Séamus Hegarty attended the National School in Kilcar and then St. Eunan's College in Letterkenny. He studied philosophy and theology at St. Patrick's College in Maynooth from 1959 to 1966 . He also graduated in Celtology and was fluent in Irish, English and German. Hegarty received on 19 June 1966 by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid , the ordination . He taught at the Colaiste na Croise Naofa in Falcarragh , where he was president from 1971 to 1981.

On February 12, 1982, Hegarty was appointed Bishop of Raphoe by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained episcopal on March 28 of the same year by the Archbishop of Armagh , Cardinal Tomás Séamus Ó Fiaich . Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Gaetano Alibrandi , and the Bishop of Derry , Edward Kevin Daly .

On October 1, 1994, Hegarty was named Bishop of Derry. On November 23, 2011, Séamus Hegarty resigned as Bishop of Derry due to illness. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation . on.
