Attractions

The Tree Council of Ireland has declared the yew tree at the entrance to St. Patrick's College to be the oldest native tree in Ireland. Known as Silken Thomas Yew , the yew tree is the last of a row of yew trees planted at the time of Maynooth Castle's construction in the 12th century.

At the west end of Main Street, at the entrance to the older section of the university campus, are the ruins of Maynooth Castle . This was built in the 13th century and was the home of the Earls of Kildare until Thomas FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Kildare , lost his title of nobility after a rebellion against Henry VIII in 1537 and was sentenced to death.

To the east of Maynooth lies Carton House , a property whose history begins in the 17th century and which was largely rebuilt by Irish architect Richard Cassels between 1739 and 1745. Until the 19th century, it was renovated and expanded several times by the restored Earls of Kildare, and from 1766 Dukes of Leinster. Edward FitzGerald, 7th Duke of Leinster , lived in the Carton House until 1920. A golf resort has been located here since 2000.

The neo-Gothic College Chapel, built between 1875 and 1905, is located on the old campus .
