Mark Travers (born May 18, 1999 in Maynooth ) is an Irish football goalkeeper . He moved to the English first division club AFC Bournemouth in 2016 and made his first international match for Ireland in September 2019 .

Career

Club career

Travers' first positions were at Confey in Leixlip and Lucan United, before joining Cherry Orchard in Dublin as a student . In July 2015, he joined the youth division of Shamrock Rovers , with whom he then played in the U-17 age group of the League of Ireland . Before that, Travers, who had been a supporter of Chelsea FC from childhood and of goalkeeper Petr Čech in particular, had auditioned in England for clubs such as Crystal Palace , Sheffield United and Preston North End .

At the age of 17 Travers then joined the AFC Bournemouth and a year later he was loaned to Weymouth FC . Weymouth played in the lower-class Southern League and on his debut against Bishop's Stortford , Travers scored a spectacular 3-2 win with a long shot from his own half. The loan deal ended in January 2018 and in July 2018 he signed a new professional contract in Bournemouth. On May 4, 2019, Travers played his first Premier League game for the Cherries against Tottenham Hotspur and remained clean in the 1-0 win. In July 2019, he renewed his long-term contract and went into the new 2019/20 season as "number 3" behind Aaron Ramsdale and Artur Boruc .

National team

Travers was active in various Irish junior teams, from the U-15 to the U-16 and the U-18 to the U-19. In March 2019, senior national coach Mick McCarthy appointed him for the first time in his squad for the upcoming qualifying games against Denmark and Gibraltar. He made his debut on September 10, 2019 in a friendly against Bulgaria , which ended with a 3-1 win.
