Simon Charles Francis (born February 16, 1985 in Nottingham ) is an English football player . The defender was one of the players at AFC Bournemouth who surprisingly managed to move up from the third division to the Premier League within three years .

Athletic career

Francis made his first steps in English professional football at Bradford City and Sheffield United before becoming a fixture at Southend United . In Southend-on-Sea , the defender spent four years and made 157 league games. This was followed in 2010 by the move to Charlton Athletic and after a successful loan period at AFC Bournemouth , he moved in January 2012 "permanently" to the "Cherries" from Bournemouth. Up until then his career had moved quite inconspicuously between the second and third leagues, but now it has turned into a sporting heights. In the 2012/13 season, Bournemouth first managed the promotion to the second division and Francis won the club's internal election for the best player of the season. In the first second division season for Bournemouth since 1990, with the exception of 45 minutes, he was always on the pitch and even with the surprise promotion to the Premier League a year later he was a key player on the way to success. In the top English league a year later he was relegated and in January 2016 Francis extended his contract until the end of the 2018/19 season.
