National team career

Boruc made his debut for the Polish national team on April 28, 2004 in a goalless draw with Ireland .

After Jerzy Dudek was out due to an injury at the beginning of the 2005/06 season, Boruc played the last World Cup qualifiers and had a significant role with his above-average performance that Poland qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . Boruc fought a similar duel with Jerzy Dudek in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup as Jens Lehmann did with Oliver Kahn . Artur Boruc was finally nominated as number one for the World Cup by the then national coach Paweł Janas . Janas even did without Jerzy Dudek entirely, which led to enormous discussions in the Polish media, which were increased after the opening defeat at the World Cup with 0-2 against Ecuador . Poland was eliminated in the preliminary round, as the team also lost against Germany and with only one win against Costa Rica fell into third place in the preliminary group.

Boruc also took part as the first goalkeeper of the Polish national team at the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland . Poland were eliminated after a draw and two defeats in the preliminary round. In the period after that he made a few appearances in the following World Cup qualification, but from 2010 to 2012 he only played two friendlies and he did not take part in the 2012 European Championship in his own country. It was not until February 2013 that he was tested for a half-time in a friendly against Ireland and then returned to the national team in qualifying for the World Cup. He played 6 of the 7 group games.

In qualifying for the European Football Championship 2016 , he was number 2 in goal behind Wojciech Szczęsny . He was not used, but was accepted as the second substitute goalkeeper in Poland 's EM squad . At 36 he was the oldest representative of his country in France, but was not deployed there. Artur Boruc resigned from the Polish national team in early 2017.

controversy

2006 saw the Catholic Boruc stir because it in February in a game at the Rangers had tried, despite a ban that traditionally Protestant supporters of the host with a sign of the cross to provoke. Boruc received a fine of unknown amount for this in August, as well as an entry in his criminal record. His club, Celtic Glasgow, whose following is traditionally Catholic, did not draw any conclusions from this incident.

On May 5, 2007 there was another argument between Boruc and the Protestant Rangers fans. After Celtic's 2-0 defeat at Rangers, Boruc borrowed a Celtic flag from a Celtic fan and ran it across the square, waving sardonically at the angry Rangers fans. After the game he said that he was just happy because Celtic won the Scottish Championship despite the defeat in front of the Rangers and he just wanted to express his joy, the Rangers fans saw this action as further provocation in their direction Clubs and since then are definitely no longer good to speak of on Boruc. With the Celtic fans, however, Boruc did not only become a public favorite since this campaign.

Others

Since joining Celtic Glasgow , Boruc has been nicknamed "Spaceman" in some fan circles because of his parades. Because of his Catholic faith, he is also called "The Holy Goalie".

In 2007 he was named the third best goalkeeper in the world by the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport .

On November 2, 2013, he was overcome after 17 seconds in the Premier League game against Stoke City by opposing goalkeeper Asmir Begović with a tee shot in front of him . The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
