Club career

Wojciech Szczęsny began playing football in his hometown at Agrykola Warsaw and then played in the youth team of Legia Warsaw . In 2006 he came to the youth academy of the English club Arsenal , for whose first team he came in 2009 in the League Cup game against West Bromwich Albion (2-0) for his first appearance. At the end of 2009 Szczęsny was loaned to FC Brentford in Football League One for half a year . He made his debut on November 21, 2009 on the 17th matchday against FC Walsall . By the end of the loan deal, he played 28 games and then returned to Arsenal. At first he was only used in games of the FA Cup . Due to the injuries of Manuel Almunia and his representative Łukasz Fabiański , Szczęsnys was increasingly relied on during the season. He made his Premier League debut on December 13, 2010 on matchday 17 against Manchester United and in the Champions League on February 16, 2011 in the first leg of the first leg against FC Barcelona .

After playing good games during the second half of the 2010-11 season , he acted as Arsenal goalkeeper. At the end of the season he finished fourth with Arsenal and moved into Champions League qualification . There he parried a penalty from Antonio Di Natale in the second leg against Udinese Calcio and secured Arsenal's entry into the Champions League group stage. He was third in the table with Arsenal at the end of the season and moved back to the Champions League group stage . In the 2013/14 Champions League season he was sent off in the round of 16 against Bayern Munich after a foul on Arjen Robben . At the end of the season he won the FA Cup with Arsenal , but was only a substitute, as his compatriot Łukasz Fabiański was preferred in this competition.

After Szczęsny had lost his regular place to David Ospina in the 2014/15 season and another goalkeeper had been signed with Petr Čech , he moved to AS Roma for a year on loan in the summer of 2015 . He completed the year in Serie A as a regular goalkeeper and took 3rd place in the championship with the club. For the 2016/17 season , Szczęsny's loan contract with Roma initially expired. He did not return to London after his vacation after the European Championships in France in 2016 , but was awarded to the Roma for another year at the beginning of August. In July 2017, Szczęsny signed a contract with Juventus Turin until 2021 .

His contract with Juventus runs until 2024.

National team

Wojciech Szczęsny played six games for the Polish U20 national football team and took part in the U-20 World Cup in Canada in 2007 . In the same year he was also in the European squad at the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup . Then he was used in the Polish U-21 and played with them in the European Championship qualification . On November 18, 2009, he finally made his debut in a friendly against Canada for the senior team and held after being substituted on for Tomasz Kuszczak at half time, the 1-0 victory. It was not until 2011 that he was used in eight other test matches and was then appointed to the squad for the EM 2012 in his own country by national coach Franciszek Smuda . He was on the starting line-up for the first group game against Greece , but saw the red card in the 68th minute after a foul on Dimitrios Salpingidis . That was the end of the EM for Szczęsny. He was suspended for the following group game against Russia ; in the final group game against the Czech Republic was Przemysław Tytoń preference.

In the following unsuccessful World Cup qualification, Szczęsny was number two, only in the last group game he got back the place in goal. In qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2016 , he played the first four games, but then lost his regular place to Łukasz Fabiański . Nevertheless, he was accepted into the Polish EM squad with jersey number 1 and was in goal in the opening match against Northern Ireland. Due to an injury, however, it was the only game he played during the tournament.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Polish squad . He was used in two group games and retired with the team after the group stage.
