Tomasz Mirosław Kuszczak [ ˈtɔmaʃ ˈkuʃtʃak ] ( ) (born March 20, 1982 in Krosno Odrzańskie ) is a former Polish football player . He played in the position of goalkeeper and was under contract with Birmingham City until the end of the 2018/19 season .
Career
The 1.90 m tall Kuszczak began his professional career in 1999 at the Polish club Śląsk Wrocław . In 2000 he came to Hertha BSC as a promising talent via KFC Uerdingen 05 , where he was never used in the Bundesliga .
When his contract with Hertha expired, he moved to the English Premier League for West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer . In his first season he only played three games, but became a regular goalkeeper in his second year.
On May 30, 2006, Kuszczak was brought due to his very good performance in the Premier League for the first time by the then national coach of Poland Pawel Janas in the Polish national team for a friendly against Colombia, where he was substituted on in the second half. His first international match was less successful. He conceded a curious goal in Poland's 2-1 defeat to make it 2-0 when he misjudged a tee shot by Colombian goalkeeper Neco Martínez across the entire field: the ball hit the field for the first time and jumped from there over him into the Polish gate. This strange goalkeeping mistake went around the world and so Kuszczak became, in an unpleasant way, famous overnight.
It was all the more surprising that national coach Paweł Janas decided not to use Jerzy Dudek when he was nominated for the squad for the 2006 World Cup and made Kuszczak the goalkeeper number two behind Artur Boruc of Celtic Glasgow .
After the World Cup, Kuszczak was loaned to Manchester United . He played his first Premier League game for the "Red Devils" on September 17, 2006 against Arsenal London, in which he a. a. held a penalty. Nevertheless, his appearances at Manchester were limited to only a few games, in which he mostly received excellent reviews. In 2007 he was finally signed by Manchester United to replace the long-time goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar , who will then end his career , in the next few years . So far, Tomasz Kuszczak has played 32 Premier League games, 11 Champions League games, 9 FA Cup games and 10 League Cup games for Manchester United.
On February 21, 2012, Manchester United announced that Kuszczak would be loaned to Watford FC until the end of the season. On June 1, 2012 United announced that they would end the collaboration at the end of the season. On June 19, 2012, Tomasz Kuszczak signed a two-year contract with Brighton & Hove Albion . With the Albions, Tomasz Kuszczak just barely missed promotion to the Premier League in the 2012/13 as well as 2013/14 season in the playoffs. Despite very good performances in the two years of his stay in Brighton, his expired contract was not renewed. In early November 2014, he signed a year-end contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers . In July 2015, he moved to second division rivals Birmingham City . There he was a regular goalkeeper for the first two years and played a total of 79 championship games before falling back in the pecking order, not even being part of the squad in the 2018/19 season and then being released in summer 2019.
In the Polish national team he was only number three behind Artur Boruc and Łukasz Fabiański with the last Polish national coach Leo Beenhakker . In the meantime, he was number one with the new coach Franciszek Smuda .
