Łukasz Fabiański [ ˈwukaʃ faˈbʲaɲski ] (born April 18, 1985 in Kostrzyn , Gorzów Voivodeship ) is a Polish football goalkeeper .
Career
In the club
The goalkeeper began his career in 1999 with Polonia Słubice . In 2002 he moved to MSP Szamotuły . He came to Lech Poznan in 2004 as a substitute goalkeeper through the provincial clubs Lubuszanin Drezdenko , Sparta Brodnica and Mieszko Gniezno . During the winter break he went to Legia Warsaw , where he became a regular goalkeeper at the start of the 2005/2006 season after Artur Boruc moved to Celtic Glasgow . Fabiański did not miss a single minute throughout the season and, in addition to winning the championship, was also voted the best goalkeeper in the Polish league.
For the 2007/08 season he moved to the English Premier League club Arsenal . He was only a substitute goalkeeper at the top London club behind Manuel Almunia . Nevertheless, he came into the season without the two goalkeepers positioned in front of him were injured when coach Arsène Wenger used him in the dispute over the goalkeeper position between Lehmann and Almunia on matchday 36. After that he continued to play sporadically, but could not establish himself permanently in the goal of Arsenal. When the then goalkeeper Manuel Almunia was injured in the 2010/11 season , Fabiański took his place and played 20 games across all competitions. But during this time he was also injured and was replaced by Wojciech Szczęsny , who is also his rival in the national team.
On May 29, 2014 Swansea City announced the signing of Fabiański. There he was a regular goalkeeper in the following two seasons and only missed one game in each season.
For the 2018/19 season , Fabianski leaves the relegated Swansea City and moves to the Premier League club West Ham United.
In the national team
In the Polish national team , the former U-21 international made his debut on March 28, 2006 against Saudi Arabia in Riyadh . The then national coach Paweł Janas also nominated him as the third goalkeeper for the Polish 2006 World Cup squad . Under the last coach of Poland, Leo Beenhakker , he even became the second National goalkeeper behind Artur Boruc and stood in the squad of the Polish national team at Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. In this tournament, however, as in the 2006 World Cup, he was not used.
In the following World Cup qualification he was number one in goal three times, but then had to pass due to a protracted knee injury. Further injuries threw him back as a result, in between he played a few friendlies, but it was not until 2013 that he returned to the national team as number two. After playing in the friendly against Switzerland in November 2014, he took over the place in goal in the remaining 6 qualifying games for the 2016 European Football Championship in France and was then part of the Polish EM squad . Due to an injury to Wojciech Szczęsny , he was in the games against Germany and Ukraine in the group stage as well as in the round of 16 against Switzerland and in the quarter-finals against Portugal in goal.
At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Polish squad . He was used in the last group game and retired with the team after the group stage.
