Fabián Cornelio Balbuena González (born August 23, 1991 in Ciudad del Este ) is a Paraguayan football player . The central defender has been under contract with English first division club West Ham United since July 2018

Club career

Beginnings in Paraguay

Fabian Balbuena started his professional career at Club Cerro Porteño in 2010 when he was promoted to the first team. There he quickly earned a place in the starting line-up of the second division team. In 2011 he was appointed captain and was able to celebrate promotion to Paraguay's top division, the Primera División , with his team this season . In January 2013, Balbuena joined the Rubio Ñu club , which he left after six months. Then moved to the reigning defending champion Club Nacional in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay . With his new club he moved into the final of the Copa Libertadores in 2014, which was lost in two final games against CA San Lorenzo de Almagro . On August 15, 2014, Balbuena was transferred to league rivals Club Libertad. With Libertad he won the Primera División Clausura in 2014 .

Corinthians Paulista

On February 16, 2016, Fabián Balbuena's move to the traditional Brazilian club Corinthians Paulista was announced. He signed a three-year contract with the São Paulo club. He made his debut in the Campeonato Paulista on February 25th against EC São Bento and Balbuena scored his first goal in the Corinthians jersey on March 19th in a 4-0 home win against CA Linense . As a key player on the defensive des Timaos , Balbuena won the São Paulo state championship with Corinthians in 2017 and 2018 and also celebrated the championship title in Série A in 2017 . On April 24, 2018, Balbuena signed a new four-year contract.

West Ham United

On July 14, 2018, Fabián Balbuena moved to the English Premier League club West Ham United , where he signed a three-year contract. The transfer fee for the central defender is around four million euros. He made his debut in the Hammers jersey on August 12, in the 4-0 away defeat against Liverpool . On December 22, 2018, he injured his knee in the game against Watford FC and was therefore substituted in the first half. This injury forced him to watch until the end of March 2019. At the end of the 2018/19 season , he had completed 23 missions. In the following season 2019/20 he made 17 league games in which he scored a goal.

Balbuena made his debut for Paraguay on March 31, 2015 in the 1-0 loss to Mexico . He was previously part of the Paraguayan squad at the Copa América 2015 and the Copa América Centenario 2016.
