Winston Wiremu Reid (born July 3, 1988 in Auckland ) is a Danish - New Zealand football player of Maori descent. The defender plays for the Premier League club West Ham United .

Career

society

Reid grew up in New Zealand to Maori parents and moved with his New Zealand mother to his Danish stepfather in Denmark at the age of ten. After playing soccer at Takapuna AFC on the North Shore in New Zealand , he worked in the youth field for SUB Sönderborg in Denmark before joining the FC Midtjylland youth academy at the age of 15 . At the age of 17, he made his first division debut on November 27, 2005 against Sønderjysk Elitesport and established himself as a regular player in the 2008/09 season. In addition to his traditional position as a central defender, he is occasionally called up as a right-back. In 2007 and 2008 he was runner-up in Denmark with Midtjylland.

In August 2010, the New Zealander signed a three-year contract with West Ham United and extended 2013 to another two years. The contract was again extended until June 30, 2023.

National team

Reid, who received Danish citizenship in 2006, played 15 missions for Danish junior national teams in the U-19, U-20 and U-21 age groups from 2007 to 2010. In March 2010 he decided to play for his country of birth in the future, although a week earlier he confirmed in an interview with a Danish football magazine that he wanted to continue playing for Denmark. National coach Ricki Herbert finally nominated Reid in May 2010 for the 23-strong New Zealand squad for the 2010 World Cup . Reid made his international debut on May 24 in the World Cup preparation game against Australia , when he came on after 33 minutes for the injured Leo Bertos . Reid played in the unfamiliar positions in right midfield and as a left full-back during the game.

At the World Cup finals, he formed the three-man defensive line together with captain Ryan Nelsen and Tommy Smith and ensured New Zealand's first point win at a World Cup final with his goal to make it 1-1 in stoppage time in the opening game against Slovakia. After further draws against the defending champions Italy (1: 1) and Paraguay (0: 0), New Zealand was eliminated in third place in the group, but was the only team in the World Cup that remained undefeated.
