Manuel "Manu" Lanzini ( maˈnwel lanˈsini ; born February 15, 1993 in Ituzaingó , Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine football player who is used as an attacking midfielder .
He comes from the River Plate youth academy , where he made over one hundred competitive appearances at a young age. In between, he worked for a year as a loan player at the Brazilian first division club Fluminense Rio de Janeiro . In August 2014, he joined the Al-Jazira Club in the United Arab Emirates . For the 2015/16 season he switched to a loan deal for the English first division club West Ham United and has been under contract there since summer 2016.
He was considered an exceptional talent in his home country for a long time and is still known there under the nickname La Joya (The Jewel).
Club career
River Plate
Beginnings and first uses
As a child, Lanzini played indoor soccer for the local club Academia Kaly de Ituzaingó , where he was discovered by the scout Ramón Maddoni, who wanted to secure a place for him in the youth academy of the Boca Juniors . Maddoni had already discovered the future national players Juan Román Riquelme , Carlos Tévez and Esteban Cambiasso and guided them to the Xeneizes . As an avowed supporter of the rival River Plate , he rejected Maddoni's offer immediately and was actually accepted into the youth department of the club from Buenos Aires in 2002. Lanzini played in all Rivers youth selections, where he already occupied the position of attacking midfielder . On November 2, 2008 he won the Superclásico 3-0 against the Boca Juniors with the junior selection . Lanzini proved in this game that he was sure to score, contributed two goals and prepared the third on top of that.
In the summer of 2010, Ángel Cappa , the coach of the first team, took him on in preparation for this. At the relevant friendly matches in Salta , Lanzini made a good impression on Cappa, who then kept him in the squad for the first season games. On August 8, 2010 (1st matchday of Torneo Inicial) he made his debut in the Millonarios jersey when he started in the 1-0 home win against Club Atlético Tigre , but was replaced by Facundo Affranchino at half-time . At 17 years, 5 months and 24 days, he became one of the youngest players to play a league game for River. In his next outing in the 3-2 home win against CA Independiente on matchday three, he prepared a goal from Rogelio Funes Mori . Despite more minutes of action, he did not make it into the starting line-up in the 19 games of Torneo Inicial. In his eight appearances, he mostly came into play from the bench and only started in three games.
In the Torneo Final he already made 12 appearances in which he was able to prepare two goals. Despite the team's attractive midfield placements in the Torneo Inicial and Final, River Plate was at the end of the 2010/11 season after two weak pre-seasons in the three-year standings only in 17th place in the table and had to play in the playoffs against the second division club Atlético Belgrano to stay up. The relegation games ended with a 0: 2 and 1: 1, which sealed the relegation. La Joya (the jewel) was not on the pitch in either of the two games.
On loan from Fluminense
The season in the second-rate Primera B Nacional missed the 18-year-old Lanzini, however, as he was loaned to the Brazilian first division club Fluminense Rio de Janeiro on July 19, 2011 , who also secured a purchase option of 15,000,000 euros. He made his professional debut on August 17 (17th matchday) in a 3-0 home win against Figueirense FC . Two weeks later he scored his first goal for Flu in a 2-1 away win over São Paulo FC . Due to his strong performances in this 2011 season , he was soon referred to as the new Neymar , or the Argentine Neymar . He scored his second goal of the season in the infamous Fla-Flu- Derby on October 9th (28th matchday) against city rivals Flamengo Rio de Janeiro , which was lost 3-2. He was used in 22 games this season, in which he collected two goals and two assists.
After he was used in six games in the following season from 2012 to July and was able to score a goal, he returned to River Plate as the loan club could not raise the € 15 million transfer fee. Fluminense won the Brazilian championship that year in Lanzini's absence.
Return and breakthrough
On July 1, 2012, Lanzini returned to River Plate, who had returned to the Superliga the previous season, and received the prestigious number 10 shirt. On August 6 (1st matchday of Torneo Inicial), he scored 1: 2 - Away defeat against CA Belgrano, his first goal of the season. Two weeks later he met again in the 3.2 away win against Club Atlético Tigre. Despite his strong start to the season, Lanzini slipped several times in this Torneo Inicial from the starting line-up of coach Matías Almeyda and under his successor Ramón Díaz , the successful coach Rivers in the late 1990s, he did not get into step. He finished the inicial with eleven inserts, of which he started in six games and scored three goals.
He only made his breakthrough in the middle of the Torneo Final in April 2013. After not being considered in four games, he started the 2-0 away win against Racing Club de Avellaneda on April 7th (8th matchday) on, scored one goal and set up the second through Leandro González Pírez . Two weeks later he converted a penalty in the 2-1 away win against CD Godoy Cruz . On May 5th, La Joya became known in Argentina in one fell swoop when he scored the fastest goal in the history of the Superclásico after just 43 seconds in the heated city derby against Boca Juniors. River had to accept the equalizer in the first half and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. At that time he was already considered an undisputed regular player in attacking midfield. In 15 missions he was on the pitch from the start, scoring five goals and preparing two more. With River Plate, he finished 2nd in the table in the 2013 Torneo Final.
In the Torneo Inicial 2013 he was still part of the starting line-up, but could hardly collect any scorer points. On September 8th (6th matchday) he scored a brace in a 3-0 home win against Club Atlético Tigre. In mid-October he was dropped from the line-up, but was able to take this place again a short time later. He was used in a total of 17 games and scored twice.
In the 2014 Torneo Final, he got back to his previous final shape. On the second match day, he met for the first time in a 1-1 away draw against Rosario Central . On March 31 (10th matchday) he became the match winner in the Superclásico against Boca Juniors when he scored a goal in the 2-1 win in Bocas La Bombonera and assisted Ramiro Funes Moris with a corner kick. With two goals and seven assists in 18 league games, he contributed significantly to the championship title Rivers.
Al-Jazira Club
On August 9, 2014, the aspiring Argentine surprisingly moved to the less ambitious Al-Jazira Club in the United Arab Emirates for a transfer fee of 7.5 million euros , where he signed a four-year contract. He became the youngest foreign player in the UAE Arabian Gulf League . The change was made although Lanzini rejected an offer from league competitor Baniyas SC a year earlier to put sporting over economic success on the grounds that it would be more competitive .
He made his debut in the top Emirati league on September 15 in a 3-2 away win against the Ajman Club , in which Lanzini scored two goals in the first half. In the qualitatively weaker league Lanzini managed to develop into one of the strongest players. He scored eight goals and provided eleven goals in 24 league games. In the table they reached the second place in the table behind the al Ain Club .
West Ham United
Change on loan
On July 22, 2015, Manu Lanzini moved to the Premier League in a one-year loan deal to the English club West Ham United . The London club also secured an optional purchase option for the midfielder. He made his competitive debut on August 6 in the 2-1 away defeat in the qualifying game for the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League against the Romanian club Astra Giurgiu , which led to West Ham's elimination from the competition. In this game, Lanzini scored the only goal of his new team after just four minutes and scored again on his debut. He made his league debut nine days later in a 2-1 home defeat by Leicester City , where he was brought into play in the closing stages for Cheikhou Kouyaté . Another two weeks later (4th matchday) he initiated the surprising 3-0 away win against Liverpool FC with his first league goal after three minutes , the Hammers' first win at Anfield since 1963. Lanzini subsequently succeeded with strong A breakthrough performance as a regular before being stopped by a thigh injury in early December and sidelined for a month. Two games after his comeback, he injured his thigh again in the league match against Liverpool FC and was again out for weeks. Then he regained his place in the starting lineup. In March 2016, West Ham United pulled the purchase option for 12 million euros, making Lanzini an integral part of the team. In his first season 2015/16 he was used in 26 league games, in which he scored six times and contributed 2 assists.
Firm commitment and establishment
As a now permanent member of the squad, Lanzini missed the season opener in the Premier League and the qualifying games for the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League due to a knee injury , in which West Ham was again defeated by Astra Giurgiu. Lanzini scored his first goal of the season on September 17 (5th matchday) in a 2: 4 away defeat against West Bromwich Albion . The weak start to the season with only three points from six games brought the Hammers into relegation concerns. However, Lanzini held his regular position on the offensive even in this difficult phase. It was not until the end of 2016 that the table was mid-table. Lanzini scored his fourth goal of the season on January 14, 2017 (21st matchday) in a 3-0 home win against Crystal Palace and prepared two goals for his team a week later in the important 3-1 away win against Middlesbrough FC . With the goal of the day in the 1-0 home win against Tottenham Hotspur on May 5, 2017, Lanzini almost nullified the championship hopes of the local rival and thus indirectly helped another city rival, Chelsea FC , to the championship title. He finished the 2016/17 season with eight goals and two assists in 35 league games. In the club's internal election for Player of the Year, he finished second behind winger Michail Antonio . However, he was voted Player of the Year by his teammates.
In the following season 2017/18 he also missed the start of the season due to knee problems. He scored his first goal on November 4 (11th matchday) when he scored the Hammers' only goal in the 1: 4 home defeat . Another weak start to the season put the Hammers in danger of relegation and ultimately ensured that coach Slaven Bilić was relieved of his duties at the beginning of November. The successor David Moyes managed to stabilize the team only after a month and then led them out of the relegation ranks. In the 3-0 away win against Stoke City on December 16 (18th matchday), he prepared two goals and took a penalty for the opening goal of his team, which he provoked by a swallow . For this deliberate deception of the referee, he was later suspended by the FA for two games. On January 13, 2018, he scored a brace in a 4-1 away win against newly promoted Huddersfield Town . He achieved the same feat on the last day of the season in a 3-1 home win against Everton . In the 2017/18 season he played in 27 league games, in which he was able to collect five goals and seven assists.
In preparation for the 2018/19 season, Manuel Lanzini tore a cruciate ligament and the regular player was threatened with a complete loss of the season. Nevertheless, the rehabilitation phase was extremely successful and he returned to training with the Hammers on January 27, 2019 . On February 22, 2019, he stepped onto the pitch for the first time this season in a 3-1 home win against Fulham FC at home in London Stadium , when he was brought into play in the closing stages for Felipe Anderson . In the next few games he made it back to the starting line-up West Hams. On the 38th and final matchday of the 2018/19 season, he scored his only goal of the season in ten appearances in a 4-1 away win against Watford FC .
In the national team
In spring 2013 he took part with Argentina in the U-20 South American Championship 2013 , where he was eliminated with his home country in the group stage. Overall, Manu Lanzini was five times for the Argentine U-20 national team and scored two goals.
In May 2016 Lanzini was appointed to the provisional 35-man squad of Argentina, which should represent the country at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. With a knee injury, however, he fell out for this tournament. In May 2017 he became the new coach Jorge Sampaoli as part of friendly international matches against Brazil and Singapore for the first time in the squad of the A-selection convened. He finally made his debut on June 9, when he was substituted on in the 81st minute for Éver Banega in the 1-0 win against Brazil at the Melbourne Cricket Ground . On March 23, 2018, he scored for the first time in the Albiceleste's shirt in a 2-0 win in a friendly against Italy at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester .
On May 21, 2018, he was nominated to the Argentine squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia , but also missed this tournament due to an injury and was replaced by Enzo Pérez .
