Club Atlético Belgrano is a sports club from the Argentine city ​​of Córdoba . He is best known for his soccer division , his first team currently plays in the Argentine second division.

The club's nicknames are Los Piratas ( Spanish for the pirates ) or Los Celestes ( the light blue ones ).

history

The club was founded on March 19, 1905 by a group of young people who named it after the historical figure Manuel Belgrano and who adopted the colors of the Argentine flag , which had been designed by Belgrano.

In 1908, the football team began playing in the second division of Cordoba. After she had won the championship three times in this division, she rose to the first division. An anecdote says that the team's playing field at that time did not yet meet the requirements for the first division of Cordoba due to the lack of protective barriers, so that the fans and players "borrowed" some elements such as posts and fences from the surrounding houses before the games, to erect these barriers. Although the items were usually returned after the Games, this earned the club the nickname piratas (pirates), which is used to this day.

In 1913 Belgrano won the first championship of the Federación Cordobesa de Fútbol, founded in the same year . The following year, the team played against CA Talleres for the first time , with these two clubs becoming arch rivals. In the first game of the two teams against each other there was a controversial goal by Belgrano after 4 minutes, whereupon the Talleres team left the field.

In the League of Cordoba, Belgrano won all championships between 1929 and 1937, with the exception of 1934, when Talleres won the title, as well as 1940, 1946, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957.

In 1968 the team took part in a national championship for the first time and reached the second Argentine division in 1986. From 1992 to 1996 and 1998 to 2002 Belgrano played in the first division , but in the meantime rose again and again to the second division. From 2006 to 2007 the club played again first class. However, Belgrano rose again at the end of the season. In the relegation game they prevailed against River Plate. Thus one was certain as a climber.

Julio César Villagra Stadium

The Belgrano stadium, the Estadio Julio César Villagra , is popularly known as Gigante de Alberdi (German: The giant of Alberdi ). It is located in the Alberdi district west of the city center. It was completed on March 17, 1929 and was one of the first stadiums in Argentina to be built from cement. In 1997 the stadium was renovated to meet the new requirements for Argentina’s first and second division. It has a capacity of around 28,000 people, making it the third largest football stadium in the city of Córdoba after the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes and the Estadio Presidente Perón by Instituto ACC .
