Roberto Jiménez Gago , Roberto for short (born February 10, 1986 in Fuenlabrada ) is a Spanish football goalkeeper who is under contract with the English first division club West Ham United .

Career

society

Roberto Jiménez comes from the youth of the traditional Spanish club Atlético Madrid . For the second team he played from 2005 to 2007. He made his first team debut on December 22, 2005 in a 2-1 draw against CA Osasuna . It was then, however, only in the Segunda División B used. For the 2007/08 season he was loaned to first division relegated Gimnàstic de Tarragona , where he became a regular goalkeeper.

After his return to Madrid, however, he had no prospect of a regular place, as this position was occupied by Leo Franco . Therefore, he was given in the summer of 2008 to the league rivals Recreativo Huelva , with Atlético receiving Florent Sinama-Pongolle in exchange . During his time in Huelva he was only used in the cup.

In the summer of 2009, the goalkeepers Leo Franco and Grégory Coupet Atlético Madrid finally left , so that the Colchoneros from the Spanish capital pulled the buyback option of the contract and provided Roberto with a three-year contract. However, he remained in the reserve role, at this time behind the talented Spanish goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo . Only when he was called to Egypt for the U-20 World Cup 2009 did Roberto make a few appearances. A short time later, another talented goalkeeper, David de Gea , penetrated the ranks of Atlético and Roberto now saw himself as the third choice in his position. With the capital club he won the UEFA Europa League , which was held for the first time under this name, in the 2009/10 season .

Due to being a reservist, Roberto decided to leave the club, but initially did so on loan. He spent the second half of the 2009/10 season at league rivals Real Saragossa , where he was able to oust Juan Pablo Carrizo as the goalkeeper. After the loan deal ended, he fulfilled his wish for a move and was finally signed by the traditional Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon . There he completed a large part of the league games.

Despite good performances and the position of goalkeeper, Roberto moved back to Spain for the 2011/12 season. He returned to Real Zaragoza , where he had already been employed once in 2010. He signed a five-year contract there and is regularly in the starting line-up again. He made his debut on August 28, 2011 against Real Madrid , where his team suffered a 6-0 home defeat. Roberto moved to Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2013.

He was awarded by his old and new club to the Greek record champions Olympiacos Piraeus for a year . Thanks to his outstanding performances in the championship and the UEFA Champions League , Roberto quickly became a crowd favorite. In February 2014, the Greek club secured the rights to the Spanish goalkeeper early. An agreement was reached with Atlético Madrid on a transfer fee of six million euros. Roberto signed a four-year contract with Olympiacos.

He has been under contract with Espanyol Barcelona since 2016 . In 2017 he was loaned to the league rivals FC Málaga for a year . After this loan expired, he returned to Espanyol Barcelona. With the end of his contract with Espanyol, he signed a two-year contract with West Ham United in the English Premier League in the summer of 2019 .

National team

He went through all Spanish youth national teams, but was often overshadowed by Sergio Asenjo and David de Gea , as was the case with Atlético Madrid .
