Leonardo Noeren Franco (born May 20, 1977 in San Nicolás de los Arroyos ) is a former Argentine football player . He played in the position of goalkeeper .
Career
society
Franco's first club was Somisa in Argentina . In 1995 the goalkeeper moved to Independiente Avellaneda . In 1997 he played for the first time in Europe, at UD Mérida in Spain . 1998 Franco went to the Balearic -Insel Mallorca to RCD Mallorca . The Argentinean has been playing for Atlético Madrid since the 2004/05 season . He was chosen to solve the goalkeeping problem of the capital city. His great strengths are fishing down flanks and his record in one-on-one duels. The weaknesses are its constancy and mostly the concentration. For the 2009/10 season he moved to the Turkish record champions Galatasaray Istanbul on a free transfer . On May 4, 2010, Leo Franco's contract was terminated. He then went back to Spain and joined Real Saragossa .
National team
Franco has played five times in the Argentine national team and was in Argentina’s World Cup squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Franco was substituted on in the quarter-finals against Germany when goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri was unable to continue playing after an injury. At that point, Argentina were leading 1-0. Franco had to allow Miroslav Klose to equalize and in the subsequent penalty shoot-out , Sergio Goycochea was unable to distinguish himself as a penalty killer as he did in the 1990 World Cup . He did not save a penalty from the German team, while his opponent Jens Lehmann was able to fend off two Argentinian shots.

Franco won the Spanish Cup in 2003 with RCD Mallorca.
