San Nicolás de los Arroyos is a city in the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina . It has about 133,000 inhabitants and is known both as a port and industrial city (metal industry, agricultural industry) and as a place of pilgrimage.
geography
San Nicolás de los Arroyos is located about 230 kilometers northwest of the capital Buenos Aires on Paraná within the so-called industrial corridor of Argentina, which extends from the Rosario area to La Plata . The city is surrounded by the so-called pampa ondulada , which, unlike the rest of the pampas, is not completely flat, but slightly hilly.
In terms of traffic, San Nicolás de los Arroyos is connected to the expressway between Rosario and Buenos Aires , as well as the Nuevo Central Argentino railway line. The latter, however, is used almost exclusively to handle goods traffic. In addition, the city has one of the most important ports on Paraná suitable for cargo ships .
history
San Nicolás de los Arroyos was founded on April 14, 1748 by Rafael de Aguiar, who named the city after Saint Nicholas of Bari, today's patron saint.
Due to its location on the edge of the province of Buenos Aires and two other Argentine provinces, San Nicolas de los Arroyos became an important venue for the clashes between centralists (unitarios) and federalists. As a result of these disputes, an agreement between 13 provinces was signed in San Nicolás de los Arroyos on May 31, 1852, which paved the way for the 1853 constitution of Argentina as "Acuerdo de San Nicolás de los Arroyos".
In 1947 the Roman Catholic diocese of San Nicolás de los Arroyos was established with its seat in San Nicolás. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari .
On May 22, 2016, an alleged apparition of Mary in San Nicolás de los Arroyos was recognized by the Catholic Church by the responsible diocesan bishop, Msgr. Hector Sabatino Cardelli.
