Juan Román Riquelme (born June 24, 1978 in San Fernando , Buenos Aires Province ) is a former Argentine football player and current sports official .

Career

Club career

Until 1996 Riquelme played with the youth of Argentinos Juniors . On November 10, 1996, the central midfielder, called Romy by his fans, played his first game as a professional at Boca Juniors . Just a week later, he scored his first goal in the game against Huracán (6-0). With the Boca Juniors he won the Argentine championship three times (Apertura 1998, Clausura 1999, Apertura 2000), twice the Copa Libertadores (2000 and 2001) and the World Cup in 2000 . In 2001 he was also named South America's Footballer of the Year .

Riquelme soon caught the attention of European football clubs as a result of his performances at Boca Juniors, and he was signed by FC Barcelona in 2002 for nine million euros. There he was unable to get into the regular team due to an injury and numerous illnesses and so he moved to Villarreal in 2003 . In the 2004/05 season he played a very convincing role there, scoring 15 goals, preparing 9 goals and helping his team to third place in the Primera División . In the following 2005/06 season it was only enough for seventh place in the Primera Division, with 12 goals (4 penalties) and 6 assists in 25 games by Riquelme, but it led Villarreal to the greatest international success so far: the move into the semi-finals of UEFA Champions League .

In the following season, however, there was tension between the player and the club's management, and he was loaned to his old club Boca Juniors in February 2007 for the rest of the season . As a result, Riquelme Boca led to victory in the Copa Libertadores 2007 , where he scored eight goals in the competition, including three goals in the two finals.

His strengths lie in dribbling, accuracy of passing and flanking, creativity, game intelligence, shooting technique and the danger of scoring goals. He is considered a safe penalty taker and dangerous free kick taker. Riquelme's weaknesses are his lack of enthusiasm for running, the too static style of play, the low speed and the inconsistency of his performance. Riquelme is considered a sensitive and mood-dependent player.

National team

With the U-20 national team, Riquelme became South America champion in 1997 and won the Junior World Championship in the same year and the title at the so-called Tournament of Hope in Toulon in 1998 .

He made his debut on November 16, 1997 against Colombia in the Argentine national team and was only used again two years later. At the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany, he scored two goals for his country in the first two games against Germany and Australia and was voted the second best player of the tournament (behind Adriano ). However, he and his team lost the final against South American rivals Brazil 1: 4. The playmaker of the Argentine national team also took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where he was used in all Argentina games.

On September 14, 2006 , he surprisingly announced his resignation from the national team. As a reason, he cited the state of health of his mother, who had been hospitalized several times, but also the ongoing criticism of himself. The resignation from the resignation took place a good year later. Four days before the competition, Riquelme was back in the national team for the Copa America in Venezuela , in which he finished second with Argentina.

For the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Riquelme was appointed as one of three senior players for the selection of his country by selection coach Sergio Batista . Argentina won this tournament and Riquelme became Olympic champion.

In March 2009, Riquelme announced his resignation from the national team after he had not been considered by the new national coach Diego Maradona for several games. At least as long as Maradona is the team's coach, he will no longer play for Argentina. The reason is that he and the national coach “do not have the same principles” and therefore “cannot work together”.

Sports official

In December 2019, Riquelme became Vice President and Sports Director of Boca Juniors.

Others

Riquelme was born in the city of San Fernando , the capital of the Partidos San Fernando in the province of Buenos Aires , and grew up in poor conditions in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires . He still has ten siblings. When Diego Maradona took off his Boca Juniors jersey after his last game on October 25, 1997 , he gave it to the then youth player Riquelme.
