Elías Ricardo Figueroa Brander (born October 25, 1946 in Valparaíso ) is a former Chilean football player . His nickname is Don Elias .
career
He played for Chile at the World Championships in 1966 (missions against Italy, North Korea, Soviet Union), 1974 (missions against the Federal Republic, GDR, Australia) and 1982 (missions against Austria, Germany, Algeria). His clubs in which he was active include Unión La Calera , Deportes Santiago Wanderers Valparaiso (1960–1966), Peñarol Montevideo (1966–1971: finalist Copa Libertadores 1971, two champions), SC Internacional (1971–75: one championship) 1971 and from 1971 to 1975 national champion of Rio Grande do Sul), Palestino Santiago de Chile (1975–1980: once champion), Fort Lauderdale Strikers (1981/82) and Colo Colo Santiago (1982–1984: once champion). In total, Figueroa was used in 47 international matches in which he scored two goals. The rather low number of internationals for his long career is explained by the fact that he went to Uruguay at the age of 20 and after four years in Montevideo moved to Brazil for six years; Due to his engagements abroad, he was less available to the national team.
At the age of 20 Elias Figueroa was brought from Peñarol to Montevideo and there became an institution that was celebrated Sunday after Sunday. When the prudent, always fair “gentleman as libero” left Uruguay for Brazil, 5000 enthusiastic fans waved goodbye to him. His successes continued in Porto Alegre. At Fort Lauderdale he fought alongside Gerd Müller and Cubillas before returning to his home country in 1982 for the Chilean record champions Colo Colo. Elias owes his popularity not only to his high football skills. “He is an exemplary sportsman and comrade from head to toe,” said national team goalkeeper Mario Osben.
He was added to the FIFA 100 list by Pelé in March 2004 . From 1974 to 1976 Figueroa was South America's Footballer of the Year three times in a row . At the 1974 World Cup he was voted the best defender of the tournament after Franz Beckenbauer . Later u. a. in Argentina Manager at Temperley.
