Rubén Paz , full name Rubén Wálter Paz Márquez , (born August 8, 1959 in Artigas ) is a former Uruguayan football player .
The midfielder was named South America's Footballer of the Year in 1988.
Player career
society
Rubén Paz began his career in 1975 with Peñarol de Artigas . There he won the Campeonato Artiguense in 1975 with his team, to which he belonged until 1976 . He then played from 1977 at the Uruguayan club Club Atlético Peñarol , where he stayed until 1981 and said goodbye by winning the top scorer's crown in the Primera División . With the team he won three championships (1978, 1979 and 1980). In 1982 he moved to Brazil for SC Internacional . He stayed with International until 1986 and also won three championships with this club (1982, 1983 and 1984). Paz moved to Europe in 1986, to the then French first division club Racing Paris , where he only stayed six months and was only used in six league games (no goal). In 1987 he went back to South America to play for the Argentine club Racing Club Asociación Civil . With the team he won two international titles in 1988, namely the Supercopa Sudamericana and the Supercopa Interamericana . In the same year he was named Argentina’s Footballer of the Year and South America’s Footballer of the Year. In 1989 Paz moved to Europe for a second time, to the Italian first division club CFC Genoa . After a season he left the club and went back to Racing Club de Avellaneda . In 1994 Paz moved to Uruguay to the Rampla Juniors , where he was in the squad in the Torneo Apertura . In 1995 he played with Frontera Rivera , in Apertura in 1995 and in Clausura in 1996, interrupted by an intermediate station in 1996 with the Artigas Wanderers, he was in ranks of Godoy Cruz . 1997 to 2000 he is again led by the then Uruguayan second or first division club Frontera Rivera. Rubén Paz ended his active career in 2006 after having played for Nacional San José de Mayo (2002), Club Tito Borjas (2003 to 2005) and Club Pirata Juniors (2006) in recent years.
National team
Paz was a member of the Uruguayan U-20 team , which won the title at the U-20 South American Football Championship in 1977 (five games / no goal) and 1979 (six missions / two goals). At the junior soccer world championship in 1977 he finished fourth with Uruguay, at the World Cup two years later he was third with Uruguay. With the senior national team of Uruguay , he won the Mundialito , which was held at the turn of the year 1980/81, and took part in the football world championships in 1986 and 1990. According to the FIFA website, Rubén Paz made a total of 66 international appearances during his career , scoring 12 goals, while another source claims 45 international matches and 8 goals scored between 16 September 1979 and 25 June 1990.

Coaching career
At the side of Mario Saralegui was at least 2013 assistant coach at the Uruguayan first division club Juventud . Since the end of February 2016 he is again assistant coach at Liverpool FC under Saralegui .
