economy
Artigas is a center for the trade of grain (especially corn) to Argentina and Brazil . There is an airport, the Aeropuerto Internacional de Artigas , and a train station, which are mainly used for commercial purposes. The mountain slopes and banks in Artigas are great sites for gemstones , especially agates and amethysts . These stones were found by chance in the area of Artigas in 1860 and mining began. Gemstones are still mined here today. Souvenirs and handicrafts are made from these stones and exported all over the world.

Attractions
One of the main attractions of Artigas is the International Bridge of Concord ( Puente Internacional de la Concordia ), which is 750 meters long and was inaugurated in 1968. It connects Artigas with Quaraí via the Cuareim River . The Avenida Lecueder connects to this bridge and runs through the whole city - from beginning to end, as a symbol of the union of the two cities.
Every year in February the street carnival Carnaval de Artigas takes place, which is based on the carnival in Rio and already attracted 500,000 spectators in 2003. The best-known samba schools are the Escuela de Samba Emperadores de la Zona Sur , founded in 1997 and the most frequent winner, the Escuela de Samba Imperio del Ayuí , the Escuela de Samba Barrio Rampla and the Escuela de Samba Académicos de Barrio Centenario.
