Mario Saralegui , full name Mario Daniel Saralegui Iriarte , (born April 24, 1959 in Artigas ) is a former Uruguayan football player and current coach.
Player career
Club career
The 1.79 meter tall Saralegui first played as part of his club career from 1978 to 1985 for Peñarol in the Primera División . During this time he won the Copa Libertadores with the Aurinegros in 1982 and was also in the final of this competition the following year . They also triumphed in the 1982 World Cup . On a national level, his club won five championships during this period (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1985). In the 1985/86 season he played 24 league games for Elche in Spain's Segunda División . He didn't score a goal. In the following season he was in the squad of the Argentine capital city club River Plate after returning to South America . In the 1987/88 season he joined Estudiantes de La Plata and hit the opposing goal once in 18 first division appearances. In 1989 and 1990 Peñarol was his employer again, before he took up an engagement in Serie A Ecuador at Barcelona SC that same year . There he reached the final of the Copa Libertadores one more time . For 1991, the Emelec association is recorded as the last stop of his active career in the Andes instead .
National team
Saralegui won with the Uruguayan U-20 national team the title at the U-20 South American Football Championship in 1977 (seven games / no goal) in Venezuela and finished fourth with the team at the Junior World Cup of the same year . The midfielder was also a member of the Uruguayan senior team , with which he participated in the 1986 World Cup. In 1982 he was part of the Uruguayan squad that won the Nehru Cup . He scored one of his two international goals in a 3-1 win against the Indian selection. In total, he completed for his home country from his debut on May 31, 1979 to his last appearance on June 13, 1986 29 internationals, in which he scored twice in the opposing goal.

Coaching career
After his active career, Saralegui began his coaching career in 1996 as a coach of the department selection of Artigas . The following year he worked in this role at Frontera Rivera Chico . From 2000 to 2002 he trained the Peñarol Formativas in the junior division . From 2002 to 2003 a station at the Wanderers de Artigas club followed. In 2003 he took over the selection of Artigas again. In 2005 he had a job as youth coordinator at Peñarol, where he initially looked after the reserve team in the Tercera División the following year. Finally, in 2006, he was promoted to coach of the first division team. In the same year he was then responsible as a coach at Uruguay Montevideo FC . In 2007 he worked in this position at Club Atlético Progreso .
Saralegui was then in a second term from 2008 to 2009 again head coach of the first division team Peñarols. With the Aurinegros , with whom he won the semi-series title in the Clausura 2008 and was Uruguayan runner-up that season, he retired in January 2009 after the 3-0 defeat in Clásico at the Copa Bimbo . In mid-December 2009 he was introduced as the new coach of Central Español to succeed Ruben Silva . There he worked with assistant coach Rubén Paz and Gabriel Souza as preparador físico . As the successor to Jorge Luis Pinto , he coached the Ecuadorian club CD El Nacional from the end of August 2010 to April 2012 . From April 15, 2012 until his due to the poor results achieved - his team won only one out of eight games and suffered five defeats in two draws - he resigned on June 20, 2012, he succeeded Fabián Bustos ' coach of Técnico Universitario . The coaching team that worked with him was composed of Venancio Ramos and Gabriel Souza in Ambato . Juventud was at this point in time with seven points scored after nine game days on the penultimate place in the table. His record in Las Piedras showed a total of five wins, three draws and seven defeats. From July 2014 to October 2014 he trained CD Olmedo in Ecuador . On October 16, 2014 he took over the vacant coaching position at bottom of the table Tacuarembó FC in Uruguay's top division. This engagement ended in December 2014. After it was officially announced on May 26, 2015 that he would take over the coaching position at Deportivo Quito in succession to his compatriot Tabaré Silva , his commitment failed the following day due to internal club resistance. On February 23, 2016, he was hired as coach of the Uruguayan first division club Liverpool Montevideo , which was in acute danger of relegation at the time , and received a contract until the end of the season.
