Lajos Tichy (born March 21, 1935 in Budapest , † January 6, 1999 there ) was a Hungarian football player and coach . Tichy took part in the 1958 , 1962 and 1966 world championships with the national team of his home country . In total, he played 72 international matches for Hungary , in which he scored 51 goals.

Club career

Lajos Tichy, who was born in Budapest , the capital of Hungary , began his professional career at Honvéd Budapest . In 1953 he was accepted into the first team squad. Honvéd was one of the best teams in Europe at the time . In goal was the 86-time Hungarian national player Gyula Grosics , in defense they missed the later Schalke coach Gyula Lóránt , József Bozsik shone in midfield and “Major” Ferenc Puskás , “headball monster” Sándor Kocsis and Zoltán Czibor took care of the attack for goals. Tichy won the Hungarian championship with Honvéd in 1949/50, 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955. But one year later, Honvéd's successful period came to an end in one fell swoop. The best players of this team, above all Puskás and Kocsis, stayed in the wake of the Hungarian uprising and its suppression at an away game in Bilbao in the west. The sudden departure of the stars meant serious financial problems for Honvéd.

They only took part in overseas tournaments in order to keep themselves afloat financially and turned down an offer from the Mexican Football Association , who offered Honvéd a place in the league there, combined with political asylum, as the situation in Hungary was were very difficult at the time. In 1957 one narrowly escaped the descent. The first success after the popular uprising was winning the Mitropa Cup in 1959. Five years later, the Hungarian Cup was won . It would be 16 years before Honvéd won another title. Lajos Tichy ended his career in 1971 after 320 games (244 goals) for Honvéd without ever changing clubs.

Career in the national team

Lajos Tichy completed 72 games for Hungary in 16 years between 1955 and 1971 , in which he scored 51 goals. The greatest success of his international playing career was third place at the 1964 European Championship , in which Spain won ahead of the Soviet Union .

World Championship 1958

After the sensationally lost final at the 1954 World Cup against Germany , which Germans still call the miracle of Bern today, the Hungarians' golden eleven broke up. There was a changing of the guard, at the latest by the popular uprising caused escape of some stars of the GDR in 1956 was tried a mixture of the remaining players of the miracle team to József Bozsik , Gyula Grosics and Nándor Hidegkuti and new young talents like Flórián Albert , Ferenc Bene or Lajos Tichy to get back on the road to success. In qualifying for the Football World Cup in 1958 , the Magyars prevailed confidently against Bulgaria and Norway , but Sweden was already in the preliminary round after a 1: 1 against Wales , a 1: 2 against the hosts, a 4: 0 against Mexico and a 1: 2 in the playoff for second place against Wales. Lajos Tichy scored four goals in the four World Cup games in 1958 (the 2-1 in the defeat against Sweden, the 1-0 and 2-0 in the 4-0 win against Mexico and the 1-0 lead in the 1: 2 in the play-off against Wales).

World Championship 1962

Four years after the preliminary round in Sweden was over, the Hungarians were again able to qualify confidently for the upcoming World Cup. Against the Netherlands , at that time not great in football, and the German Democratic Republic , the Magyars were able to prevail with 7: 1 points. In Chile you saw a Hungarian team that reminded you of the great days of the past. In the very first game, the men put an exclamation mark around the only remaining player from the final in Bern , Gyula Grosics , with a 2-1 win against football motherland England . The coronation came in the second game: World Cup newcomers Bulgaria were swept 6-1 out of the Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua . In the last group game they couldn't get beyond a goalless draw against Argentina , so that in the quarter-finals Czechoslovakia , who would later be the finalist, was waiting. Here the surprise team of the tournament was disenchanted by the Czechs and had to travel home after the 0: 1. Lajos Tichy scored three goals again at this World Cup (the 1-0 in a 2-1 win against England and the 3-0 and 6-1 win in a 6-1 win against Bulgaria).

World Championship 1966

For the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England , the Magyars were again without problems qualify . After only one draw against the GDR and victories against Austria and in the second game also the German Democratic Republic , Hungary was in England. There they caused a real sensation in the group stage. Together with group winners Portugal they reached the quarter-finals, defending champions Brazil had to return home. Only against the Portuguese the Hungarians had to accept a 1: 3 defeat, against Brazil and Bulgaria (3: 1 each) they won. In the quarter-finals, however, it was over, the Soviets proved to be too strong. Lajos Tichy failed to score at this World Cup tournament, this time Ferenc Bene was responsible for the goals, who scored once in each of the four World Cup games. The World Cup story of Lajos Tichy ended with the end of the quarter-finals in Sunderland .

After the active career

After the end of his active career in 1971, Lajos Tichy disappeared from the big football stage for five years before he returned to his old club in 1976. As a coach, he tried to build on old successful days with Honvéd . In 1980 he won Honvéd's first title in 16 years. Winning the Hungarian championship marked the beginning of the Budapest’s second successful period, which culminated in six championships in the 1980s . Tichy's time at Honvéd was finally over in 1982 and he retired.

Lajos Tichy died on January 6, 1999 at the age of 63.
