In Group 4, the young Hungarian team was particularly convincing, shining above all against England (2: 1) and Bulgaria (6: 1). The stars of the technically convincing Magyars were goalkeeper Grosics (last player from the 54 team) and the great young center forward Florian Albert. When Albert was missing against Argentina, it was only enough to make it 0-0. Meanwhile, England secured second place with a bang, with the goal difference against Argentina being decisive. In the 3-1 win against the Gauchos, the English, dominated by Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Charlton, showed their best performance.

Actually, the Hungarians against Czechoslovakia were rated higher than the Eastern Bloc partners because of their performance in the preliminary round. But things turned out differently. A counter goal by Scherer, scored during an urgent phase of the Hungarians, decided the match. The Czechoslovaks had success with their concrete defense, because the Hungarians could not get through. A poor referee performance and the outstanding goalkeeper Schroif were further reasons for the departure of the Magyars
