As in the World Championships in 1950 (0: 4) and 1954 (0: 5), Mexico played its opening game against Brazil in 1962. "El Tri" lost again and did not score a goal this time either; but the performance in this match was much better than in the two previous games and the 0: 2 against the reigning and future world champion was a great success. Defender Jesús del Muro later recalled the encounter with pride: “It was the first time that the Brazilians had to exhaust themselves. In the first half we even had two chances to take the lead. ”In the end, Brazil's superstar Pelé made the difference: in the 56th minute he gave Zagallo a tailor-made header to lead the Selecão and in the 72nd minute he ran alone from midfield in the direction of the Mexican goal, played around the entire defense and established the final score.

The Spaniards dominated the game in the first half and it was only thanks to the once again outstanding Carbajal that Mexico was not already behind at the break. The Mexican goalkeeper had saved 32 balls throughout the game, most of them in the first half. In the second half, the Mexicans took command and worked out a few options that they did not know how to use. When everyone was expecting a goalless draw (it would have been their second draw in Mexico's 13th World Cup game and the first game without conceding a goal!), Spain struck cold. 30 seconds before the final whistle, Joaquín Peiró scored the then no longer necessarily expected winning goal for the Iberians.

Although the Mexicans fell behind early on and their typical fate seemed to take its course, everything was different this time. Isidoro Díaz soon equalized and after half an hour "el Tri" was even in the lead, which had never happened before in a World Cup match. The final decision was made in the last minute. After Jan Lála went to the ball with his hand in the penalty area, Héctor Hernández converted the penalty kick to make it 3-1. It was the first ever victory for the Mexicans at a World Cup. In the previous 13 games, there had only been one draw and 12 defeats. That the long-awaited first World Cup victory came against the eventual runner-up of the world champions (who lost the final against Brazil with the same result) and that the Spanish defeat against Brazil (1: 2) meant that a World Cup was not finished bottom of the group for the first time , increased the triumph of the Mexicans immeasurably. At the same time, this victory was a special “gift” for the Mexican goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal, who celebrated his 33rd birthday on this very day.
