Preliminary round

The team from Iran started the game offensively and caused the Mexicans some difficulties. But the Mexicans managed to take the lead. After a free kick kicked by Pavel Pardo and a subsequent header from Guillermo Franco , Omar Bravo scored in the 29th minute from a distance of four meters to make it 1-0 for "El Tri". Iran was not deterred and intensified its attacks. In the 36th minute, Yahya Golmohammadi managed to equalize. After the break, Mexico was much more offensive. It was not until the 76th minute, however, before Bravo took the lead again after an assist from Zinha . Just three minutes later, Zinha headed a cross from Mario Méndez into the goal and made it 3-1. However, it was to be the only World Cup victory for the Mexicans on German soil.

The Mexicans played terrifyingly without ideas and seemed more inhibited than inspired by the imposing backdrop with an estimated 30,000 Mexican fans. Thus the brilliant shot turned Carlos Salcido of the game from 20 yards from goal at the outset soon as flash in the pan . After a free kick kicked by Rafael Márquez in the 14th minute landed on the post, the "Black Antelopes" were braver, but in the end Paulo Figueiredo (23rd) and Antonio Mendonça (26th) acted too imprecisely. Just before the break, Angola's goalkeeper João Ricardo blocked a shot from Guillermo Franco at close range. In the second half too, Ricardo, who was voted “Player of the Match”, saved his team several times from looming deficit and in the end had the “luck of the capable” when Omar Bravo hit the post again in the 89th minute .

To qualify for the round of 16 on their own, Mexico should have scored against Portugal. "El Tri" would have needed a win to become group winner himself and thus avoid the "feared opponent" Argentina. But even though Portugal coach Scolari did without some of his stars like Cristiano Ronaldo , Deco and Pauleta and Mexico got off to a furious start, the Portuguese team, which had been reluctant until then, surprisingly took the lead in the sixth minute. After dribbling fit Simão to Maniche , who scored in the right corner of the net with a dry shot from ten meters. The backlog unsettled the Mexicans, whose actions were often hasty and prevented an orderly build-up of the game. After a handball by captain Márquez in the penalty area and the resulting penalty , Simão increased to 2-0 for Portugal in the 24th minute. Five minutes later Fonseca after one of Pardo came corner by head of the first goal. The flanker Pardo had the chance to equalize just before the break, but Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo saved with a brilliant save. In the second half, the Mexicans pushed for the equalizer. The best opportunity came after a 57th-minute penalty awarded after Miguel brought down Luis Pérez . But Bravo chased the ball over the gate. Because the parallel game ended in a draw, “El Tri” qualified as second in the group for the second round.

Round of 16

Initially, the Mexicans took control of the action and got their first chance early on when Jared Borgetti headed just over the crossbar. In the sixth minute, the pressure from the Mexicans was rewarded. Castro headed a free kick kicked by Pardo to his captain Rafael Márquez , who scored the opening goal for “El Tri”. Argentina were visibly shocked, but unexpectedly equalized when Borgetti headed a corner kick from Riquelme into their own goal in the tenth minute . In the next twenty minutes, a fast-paced game of two equal opponents developed, each with a great chance for Hernán Crespo , who completed a lob from six meters from the gate in the 23rd minute, and Borgetti, who a few minutes later a long shot just over the gate sat. In the second half, the Argentines gradually gained the upper hand and came to their greatest opportunity after just under an hour when Javier Saviola came to a pass from Riquelme from eight meters in front of Oswaldo Sánchez , but failed at the Mexican goalkeeper. Towards the end of the game, both teams each had a good chance. Initially headed Francisco Fonseca a cross from Gonzalo Pineda just wide (86 ') and then joined Lionel Messi a pass from Carlos Tevez off into an empty net. But the hit was wrongly refused recognition due to alleged offside position . The decision in favor of the gauchos came with a dream goal in the eighth minute of extra time : Maxi Rodríguez stopped a cross ball from Sorín at the corner of the box with his chest, let it drain and turned it with a hard shot from the turn into the corner.
