Ricardo [ ʁiˈkaɾðu ], full name Ricardo Alexandre Martins Soares Pereira , (born February 11, 1976 in Montijo ) is a former Portuguese football goalkeeper . In the 2000s, he was the goalkeeper of the Portuguese national football team for several years, and with Portugal he became vice European champion in 2004 and fourth in the World Cup in 2006.
society
Ricardo began his career in 1993 in his hometown with the then third division CD Montijo . In 1994 he moved to the first Portuguese division for Boavista Porto . By 2003 Ricardo played in more than 150 league games and won the Portuguese Cup with Boavista in 1997 and the championship in 2001. From 2003 to 2007 he played at Sporting Lisbon , where he was used in 118 league games and in 2007 he was able to win the Portuguese Cup again. Then Ricardo moved to the first Spanish league to Betis Sevilla . Because he was no longer considered in Spain in the 2009/10 season, Ricardo went to Leicester City for one season in the English second division . The last stations of his career were the Portuguese clubs Vitória Setúbal and SC Olhanense . In the latter, he played his last game as a professional footballer in 2014.
National team
Ricardo made his debut in the Portuguese national football team in 2001 against Ireland .
He was part of the Portuguese team at the 2002 World Cup , but was not used because national coach António Oliveira relied on Vítor Baía as the goalkeeper.
At the 2004 European Championship on home soil Ricardo took part as the first goalkeeper. There he became a great hero when he saved a penalty kick against Darius Vassell without gloves in the quarter-finals against England and converted the subsequent penalty for Portugal itself. With his team he reached the final of this tournament, which was lost to Greece .
He was also in the Portuguese goal at the 2006 World Cup . In the quarter-finals there was a new edition against England and this time Ricardo was able to prove his class on penalties . He was able to save Frank Lampard , Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher's penalties . This made him the first goalkeeper to save three penalties in a World Cup. After the World Cup, he was elected to the All-Star Team .
At the EM 2008 , which ended for Portugal in the quarter-finals, Ricardo was again used in all games for Portugal. After the European Championship he was replaced by Quim in the goal of the national team and did not play another game.
