A corner , even a corner , corner , in Switzerland and Austria also Corner called, is a game sequel in football . The referee decides on a corner kick if the ball has crossed the goal line - except between the goal posts and under the crossbar (i.e. it does not go into the goal) - and was last touched by a player from the defending team. As an exception, there is also a corner kick if the ball from a continuation of play by the same team goes straight into its own goal without being touched by another player (principle: an advantage must not become a disadvantage). The corner kick is one of the so-called standard situations . A goal can be scored directly from a corner kick; the offside rule is repealed when taking a corner kick.
history
The corner kick was officially introduced in the Sheffield Rules of 1866. It is only since the 1924/25 season that a goal can be scored directly with a corner kick , following a decision by FIFA on a proposal by the Scottish Football Association.
The first goal after a corner kick was scored by Billy Alston on August 21, 1924 in a Scottish League game. During the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, two goals by Héctor Scarone were not yet recognized; nevertheless, the Uruguayan national team won the tournament. The first goal in an international match was finally scored by the Argentine Cesáreo Onzari on October 2 of the same year in the friendly between Argentina and Uruguay (2-1). Since then, a corner kick that was converted directly into South America has been known as the “Olympic goal” (Spanish: gol olímpico ).
The only goal of this type, at a FIFA World Cup has been achieved, the Colombian scored Marco Coll on 3 June at the World Cup 1962 in Chile , during the preliminary round match Soviet Union - Colombia (4: 4), in the stadium Carlos Dittborn the city of Arica . He defeated Lev Yashin , who was then considered the best goalkeeper in the world.

- The ball must be placed in the quarter circle (radius: 1 meter) of the corner flag that is closest to the point where the ball crossed the goal line.
- The corner flag must not be removed.
- Before the corner kick has been taken, opponents may not come closer than 9.15 m to the quarter circle.
- Once the ball is kicked and moving, it is in play.
- Before the kicker is allowed to touch the ball a second time, it must have been touched by another player.
Others
A direct transformation of the corner kick to the goal is very rare, as the ball cannot fly into the goal on a straight trajectory and therefore has to be brought onto a circular trajectory that first leads away from the goal line and then returns to it at goal height. This is only possible for outspoken “art shooters”. B. Rainer Bonhof , Mario Basler , Roberto Carlos , Julian Schuster or Milenko Ačimovič belong. Meanwhile, Bernd Nickel holds the Bundesliga record : Four of his 141 Bundesliga goals were corner kicks - curiously, from all four corners of the Frankfurt Waldstadion.
The standard design of a corner is aimed more at the indirect than the direct route to the gate. An attempt is made to score a goal through one or two pass stations. For example, the ball can be presented high up into the penalty area and should be lowered to jump height immediately in front of the goal and be headed into the goal by players with a strong header.
A corner kick can also be caused by a kick-off, a direct or indirect free kick that is shot into your own goal without a team-mate or opponent touching the ball, because this is not counted as a goal. Reason: An advantage must not result in a disadvantage. According to the rules, the same applies to a hit scored in the same way by a corner kick, which should lead across the entire field, as well as to a throw-in and a referee's ball if the ball lands in his own goal without further contact by a player.
Corner kick in other sports
The corner kick also exists in other team sports. In hockey , the "long corner" roughly corresponds to the corner kick in football, but all rule violations in your own shooting circle are punished with a penalty corner (also called "short corner").
