Wolfgang Theodor Wessels (born January 19, 1948 in Cologne ) is a German political scientist.

Life

Wolfgang Wessels has held the Jean Monnet Chair at the Research Institute for Political Science and European Issues at the University of Cologne since 1994 . Previously he was Director of the Institute for European Politics (IEP) and the Political and Administrative Department at the College of Europe in Bruges . At times he was also a managing member of the Presidential Board of the Europa-Union Deutschland .

His research and teaching focus on the political system of the European Union and in particular the European Council , the role of the EU in the international system, the deepening and expansion of the EU as well as theories of international relations and European integration . Together with Werner Weidenfeld , he has been publishing the “Yearbook of European Integration” since 1980 and the paperback “Europe from AZ” since 1991.

Wessels is involved in a large number of research and teaching networks: He is chairman of the board of the Institute for European Politics (IEP, Berlin) and the Trans European Political Studies Association (TEPSA, Brussels). Since 1981 he has been visiting professor at the Europakolleg Bruges and Natolin , at the Europainstitute at the University of Basel , at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna and the Free University (FU) Berlin . Since 2010 he has been Vice-President of the German consortium for the establishment of the Turkish-German University (TDU) in Istanbul.

Wolfgang Wessels has coordinated various research projects that have been or are being funded by the German Research Foundation , the Fritz Thyssen and Volkswagen Foundation and the European Commission . In recent years he was the coordinator of the ERASMUS Academic Network "LISBOAN - researching and teaching the Treaty of Lisbon" and the "Observatory of Parliaments after the Lisbon Treaty (OPAL)" and was in charge of the "Marie Curie Initial Training Network (EXACT)" EU external relations, the Jean Monnet module "Europe @ Work - Where the Ivory Tower meets Political Life", the "Erasmus Academic Network on Parliamentary Democracy in Europe (PADEMIA)", and the Ph.D. training program “Pegasus”. Since April 2016 Wessels has also been the coordinator of the Horizon 2020 research project "FEUTURE: The Future of EU-Turkey Relations: Mapping Dynamics and Testing Scenarios" and, since November 2017, of the Jean Monnet network "Enhancing VIsibility of the Academic DialogUe on EU-Turkey CooperaTion ( VIADUCT) ". In addition, he supervised the project "Studying the European Council - Mastering and Disseminating Knowledge about a Key Institution (SUMMIT)", which ended in 2017, and is in charge of the current projects "Blickwechsel - TRIANGLE", "Jean Monnet Chair for Turkey and European Union Studies (MONTEUS) "And" EUCOPAS - Debating the European Union in Cologne and Paris ".

Wolfgang Wessels has held an “Ad personam Jean-Monnet Chair” since 1994. The European Commission recognized him in 2007 for excellent research and teaching in the field of European integration with the “Jean Monnet - European Studies” award in gold (“Jean Monnet - European Studies GOLD”). Furthermore, Wolfgang Wessels received the “Award for Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary European Studies” from the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) in 2011 and the University of Cologne Prize in 2015 in the “Research” category for outstanding academic achievements. In June 2016 he also received the “Vision for Europe” award from the Prague European Summit.

At the end of 2015, Wolfgang Wessels published his English-language standard work “The European Council” with Palgrave Macmillan .

After his retirement in 2016, the Center for Turkey and EU Studies (CETEUS) was founded at the University of Cologne in order to continue the work of the previously existing Chair for European Politics and to deal with topics related to the European Union and Turkey in the future to deal with. Wolfgang Wessels took over the office of director in this context.
