Institute for European Politics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute for European Politics (IEP) in Berlin is a non-profit organization working in the field of European integration .

The IEP was founded in the 1950s by the Europa-Union Deutschland in the context of the European Movement Germany , but since the 1980s the IEP has increasingly emancipated itself from the European associations. The IEP works at the interface between science, politics, administration and European education. The institute's interdisciplinary and European-oriented activities contribute to promoting European unification through the scientific analysis of topics of European politics and the development of political options. The IEP fulfills this mandate through research projects, discussion forums and conferences, the implementation of EU training programs and the publication of scientific publications on current topics of European integration.

The institute's strategic partners are both the Federal Foreign Office and the European Commission . The IEP is a member of the European Movement Germany Networks , the European Integration Working Group and the Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA).

President is Werner Hoyer . The chairman of the board is Wolfgang Wessels , the directors are Katrin Böttger and Funda Tekin. Mathias Jopp is in charge of international programs , Franz Schoser is the treasurer . Further board members are Wolf-Ruthart Born , Daniel Göler , Hartmut Marhold , Michael Kreile and Peter-Christian Müller-Graff .

Research and Teaching

In its work, the institute combines the analysis of current issues with the examination of long-term development trends in European politics. The research activities of the IEP are grouped into five priority areas. The research departments of the IEP deal with various topics of European politics and integration, for example with the “Debate on the Future of the European Union” or “Enlargement, Neighborhood and Central Asia”. The contents and results of the research of the IEP are also taken up again in various summer schools and study programs. In cooperation with the Center international de formation européenne (Cife), the Institute for European Politics runs, for example, the English-language PhD support program “The EU, Central Asia and the Caucasus in the International System” (EUCACIS), which is aimed at postgraduates and young professionals from the region of wider Central Asia.

Discussion platform

One of the most important goals is to promote a discourse on European political issues and the exchange between political decision-makers, scientists, journalists and citizens. In order to meet this goal, the IEP organizes various discussion platforms such as the IEP lunchtime discussions or bilateral discussion forums such as the German-Hungarian Forum, the German-Portuguese Forum and the German-Nordic-Baltic Forum. The midday discussions deal with current issues in European politics. For this purpose, high-profile speakers and experts from government, administration and science of the EU member states and institutions are invited to discuss the challenges and perspectives of European integration.

Capacity development

In addition to the academic discussion of European integration, the “Capacity Development” department deals with the sustainable strengthening of public administrations in the countries of Southeast Europe in the process of bringing them closer to the EU through qualification programs and series of events. The IEP works closely with international clients and partners such as the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). All programs combine interactive learning methods with a subject-specific exchange of knowledge and experience, in particular to contribute to the transfer of know-how and ultimately to bringing the target countries closer to the EU.
